The $280,000 buildout will renovate roughly 6,763 square feet of retail space, with construction slated to run from September 29 through December 1, 2026.
The project was first reported by Community Impact, which detailed a project record filed with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation covering retail fixtures and finishes, mechanical work, electrical work, and plumbing work at the site. State construction filings reviewed separately identify SSS Village at Southwest LLC as the property owner of Fondren Market Place and Fort Worth-based Qurom Architects,Inc. as the architectural design firm of record for the buildout, according to state filings.
The address sits near West Bellfort Avenue in Harris County's 77096 ZIP code. Commercial development filings show the same shopping strip already houses a Hibbett Sports location at 11131 Fondren Road, along with other tenants including Jefferson Dental Clinic at 11198 Fondren Road.
A Family-Owned Chain With Deep Corporate Backing
Shoe Palace started in San Jose, California, in 1993 and describes itself as family-owned and operated, per the original report. The chain sells footwear, apparel, and accessories for men, women, and children, carrying brands including Nike, Adidas, Converse, Jordan, and Vans, along with boots, lifestyle footwear, and running and sports footwear, and it operates both physical stores and an online platform.
Behind that family-facing brand sits a much larger corporate structure. British sportswear conglomerate JD Sports Fashion plc acquired Shoe Palace in a $325 million deal in December 2020, with the founding Mersho family retaining a 20% equity stake in JD's intermediate U.S. holding company, Genesis Holdings Inc., according to Forbes.
Part Of A Bigger Houston-Area Push

Houston's retail scene has already seen Shoe Palace's footprint shift this year — Hoodline reported in August that a new dd's DISCOUNTS store near the Astrodome is moving into a building the chain previously leased. The Fondren Road location would also sit next to an existing Hibbett Sports store; both chains belong to JD Sports.
Corporate Scale Behind The Storefront
By early 2026, JD Sports operated more than 2,000 U.S. locations across its retail banners — including Shoe Palace, Finish Line, DTLR, and Hibbett. JD Sports also has global and North American operations.
The broader footwear market includes both athletic and lifestyle categories.
Shoe Palace stores have also been getting a technology upgrade alongside their physical renovations. In January 2025, Shoe Palace and sister chain DTLR began rolling out cloud-native mobile point-of-sale and inventory technology from Jumpmind across their combined 450 U.S. stores, letting store associates handle mobile checkouts and fulfill online orders directly from the sales floor, according to Retail TouchPoints.
