A shooting at one of Orlando's busiest shopping centers left one person hospitalized in stable condition Saturday, with police offering few details as the investigation continues. Officers responded to Colonial Plaza at the intersection of East Colonial Drive and Bumby Avenue, sectioning off portions of the retail complex while emergency crews transported the injured person for treatment.
The Orlando Police Department confirmed it responded to a shooting at the plaza but had not disclosed whether anyone was injured, according to WFTV. Police later said one individual was taken to the hospital and was in stable condition, but the department had not disclosed what it was investigating as of the shooting's occurrence, leaving the exact nature of the incident unclear. Nearby eyewitnesses told the station they were having lunch when police arrived and cordoned off the area.
Investigation Still Underway
The investigation remains active, and the station reported it would provide updates as more information becomes available. No arrests, suspect description, or motive had been released. WFTV said it had reached out to the Orlando Police Department for additional details.
Colonial Plaza is no ordinary strip mall. The center first opened in January 1956 as Florida's largest retail development at the time, and after a mid-1990s redevelopment it now spans more than 500,000 square feet and draws an estimated 5.5 million visits a year, according to a LoopNet listing. More than 50 store suites fill the property, including Sprouts Farmers Market, Marshalls, Old Navy, Barnes & Noble, Hobby Lobby, Total Wine & More, and Ulta Beauty, per Bungalower. That density of shoppers and stores underscores how many bystanders could have been nearby when gunfire broke out.
A Corridor With A Troubled History
The plaza sits along East Colonial Drive, one of Orlando's busiest east-west thoroughfares, carrying tens of thousands of vehicles daily between the Milk District and Mills 50 District. The corridor has seen violence before: in May 2025, an Orange County court sentenced an Orlando man to 50 years in prison for second-degree murder after a road-rage dispute on East Colonial Drive turned into a fatal shooting, as Hoodline reported at the time. Years earlier, in July 2017, suspects fired on an Orlando police patrol vehicle stationed at a substation on Primrose Avenue, just blocks east of the Bumby Avenue and East Colonial Drive intersection, according to WKMG.
Citywide Crime Numbers Tell A Different Story
The Saturday shooting stands in contrast to Orlando's broader crime trends. The Orlando Police Department reported in August that citywide violent crime fell 7% and shootings dropped 15% during the first half of 2026 compared to the same period last year. The department's data also shows Orlando recorded just 10 homicides in 2025, down from 23 the year before, marking the city's lowest single-year homicide total since 1971 alongside a 19% drop in overall citywide crime.
If charges are eventually filed, Florida law carries steep penalties for gun violence. Aggravated battery with a deadly weapon is a second-degree felony under Florida Statute § 784.045, punishable by up to 15 years in prison and fines as high as $10,000. Should prosecutors pursue firearm-discharge charges, the state's “10-20-Life” enhancement law, Florida Statute § 775.087, mandates a minimum 20-year sentence for discharging a firearm during certain felonies, rising to 25 years to life if the discharge causes great bodily harm.
