A 23-year-old District Heights man is being held without bond at the Montgomery County Detention Center after detectives say he carjacked a woman in Silver Spring back in 2022, dragging her along the roadway as he sped off in her vehicle. Daymonte Antonyio Jones was arrested on August 31, more than four years after the violent encounter, closing out a case that had gone unsolved since the summer of 2022.
According to the Montgomery County Department of Police Major Crimes Division, 3rd District officers responded to the 8700 block of Georgia Avenue at approximately 7:45 p.m. on July 5, 2022, after receiving a report of a carjacking. Police say the victim had returned to her vehicle only to find a suspect sitting in the driver's seat, and an altercation followed before the suspect fled in her car, dragging her along the roadway in the process, as reported by The MoCo Show. The victim suffered significant injuries in the incident.
Earlier reporting from Montgomery Community Media at the time noted that the woman had briefly left her car running as she stepped out of it, and that initial police reports described her reaching back inside the vehicle to try to stop the intruder before she was dragged. Police pursued the vehicle after the carjacking, and it ultimately crashed into Washington, D.C., where a suspect was taken into custody; WUSA9 later reported Jones's arrest more than four years after the incident.
Detectives Finally Put a Name to the Suspect
Detectives eventually identified Jones as the suspect and obtained an arrest warrant charging him with carjacking. A Hoodline report described a March 26, 2025, Northeast D.C. scooter robbery case involving Jones, who faced charges of carrying a pistol without a license and receiving stolen property; the armed-robbery charges were attributed to the other two suspects, as detailed in an earlier report.
Under Maryland Criminal Law Code § 3-405, carjacking is a felony punishable by up to 30 years in prison, according to Westlaw's statutory records. Maryland law also specifies that a defendant's lack of intent to permanently keep the vehicle is not a valid legal defense.
A Recurring Problem Along Georgia Avenue
The 2022 carjacking occurred along Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring.
Still, the case sits within a broader county context.
Part of a Wider Cross-Border Pattern
Jones's case fits into a pattern of violent carjackings straddling the D.C.-Maryland line. In August, Hoodline reported that D.C. resident Taurian Anderson pleaded guilty to a multi-jurisdictional crime spree that also included dragging a driver during a Silver Spring carjacking. And in January, Hoodline detailed how Elmer Bonilla was sentenced to 84 months in federal prison for a 2024 carjacking conspiracy in the District.
Across the border in D.C., armed carjacking is a serious offense. The Montgomery County Department of Police advises drivers to keep their doors locked immediately upon entering a vehicle, avoid leaving idling cars unattended while running errands, and never physically resist a carjacker.
