Sister League of San Diego says it has provided supportive housing for San Diego women since 1942. The nonprofit describes its work as safe housing and supportive day programming for adult women affected by mental health issues, homelessness, trauma and domestic abuse, according to the organization's website.
A housing model built around support
The organization says its long-term aim is to help women become confident and self-sufficient. Its affordable housing and support services are intended to help residents live as independently as possible while beginning recovery, according to the nonprofit's website.
FOX 5 San Diego reported that Christine Rogers, a former Sister League resident, continues to return to the organization's garden. The station reported that Rogers found the garden helpful during a period of anxiety and that fellow residents, including Hope, supported her after she was diagnosed with a terminal brain tumor.
Organization plans September gala
Regional housing context
The need for housing and support services extends beyond any one program. According to the Regional Task Force on Homelessness San Diego, the 2025 Point-in-Time Count found no less than 9,905 people experiencing homelessness throughout San Diego County, down from 10,605 a year earlier. The San Diego Continuum of Care's 2024 WeAllCount regional breakdown listed 661 female homeless persons and 1,858 female sheltered persons.
Housing plans in Hillcrest have also focused on expanding options near services and transit. According to the City of San Diego Planning Department, the City Council adopted the Hillcrest Focused Plan Amendment on July 30, 2024. The San Diego Housing Commission has presented a proposal for 97 affordable rental housing units and one unrestricted manager's unit at 1601 University Avenue in Council District 3.
Sister League is scheduled to hold its annual gala on Sept. 27, 2026, according to the nonprofit's website. September also includes National Suicide Prevention Month and National Recovery Month, according to the International Association of Fire Fighters.
