Sourpuss Donuts has moved from temporary sales to a permanent cafe at 3231 Mission Boulevard in Mission Beach. The shop opened at the location in spring 2026 after building its business through farmers-market sales and pop-up events. WhatNow reported, citing filings with the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health, that the storefront was previously occupied by Ceviches & Beers. The report also identified Sourpuss’s weekly Saturday drops at Bivouac Adventure Lodge in North Park, while Times of San Diego reported that the business had spent three years as a vendor at the Del Mar Farmers Market.
A cafe built around sourdough donuts
Sourpuss says its donuts are made with organic ingredients and slow-fermented sourdough, and that it does not use seed oils or artificial ingredients, according to Sourpuss Donuts. Times of San Diego reported the business’s claim that the shop makes San Diego’s only sourdough brioche donuts. The menu also includes coffee, fruit, yogurt bowls, sandwiches, burgers and fries; offerings can change over time, according to the shop and Times of San Diego.
The owners’ restaurant background
Chef Renee Fox and her husband, Dave Readyhough, previously operated the Santa Fe restaurants Arable and Loyal Hound before relocating to San Diego. Fox’s background includes appearances on the Food Network and participation in the James Beard Foundation’s chef boot camp, according to Times of San Diego and the James Beard Foundation. A 2016 account of Loyal Hound by Gil’s Thrilling (And Filling) Blog said the restaurant’s name referred to the couple’s beagle, Lola.

According to SanDiego.org, San Diego hosted an estimated 32.5 million visitors in 2024 and remains a top U.S. travel destination. That countywide tourism figure does not establish visitor volume, seasonal customer flow or commercial prospects specifically for Mission Beach.

Sourpuss lists its Mission Beach cafe as open Thursday through Monday from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with Tuesdays and Wednesdays off. Because the shop says donuts may sell out before closing, it asks customers to check availability by calling 619-509-0678. The business also describes the location as having an outdoor patio between the beach and the bay, according to Sourpuss Donuts.
