St. Louis is heading into a dangerously hot Tuesday, with clear morning skies giving way to a high near 100 degrees and heat-index values as high as 108. A Heat Advisory is in effect across the city and surrounding areas as summer-like heat makes an aggressive return.
The advisory runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service. South winds will stay around 7 to 10 mph, but they will offer little relief from the combination of high temperatures and humidity.
Storms Could Arrive After The Heat Peaks
Scattered showers and thunderstorms could develop by mid-to-late afternoon, with chances of 30 to 50 percent late in the afternoon into tonight as storms move through the region. Forecasters warn that some storms could produce localized damaging wind gusts and heavy rainfall, while other neighborhoods may see little or no rain.
Wednesday brings another hot day, with highs in the mid-90s and heat-index values of 100 to 105 degrees or higher, although showers and thunderstorms could linger into the morning. The forecast then stays close to 100 degrees Thursday before easing slightly to the mid-90s Friday and Saturday, continuing the hot pattern outlined in an earlier Hoodline forecast.
Cooler Air Finally Shows Up This Weekend
The bigger shift arrives Sunday, when a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms accompanies a high near 90. Monday looks cooler still, with a high near 88 and a 99 percent precipitation probability.
For Tuesday, residents should drink plenty of fluids, limit strenuous outdoor activity during the afternoon, and use air conditioning or shaded spaces whenever possible. Children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles, and anyone showing signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke should be moved to a cool place immediately.
