Saint Louis University is throwing open the doors of its Busch Student Center on Friday, Oct. 30, for the third annual Tech-Chain conference, a gathering expected to draw more than 200 senior supply chain leaders to St. Louis for a single-day deep dive into artificial intelligence. The event, titled Generative AI, Agentic AI, and the Road to the Autonomous Supply Chain, runs from 7:15 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and centers on a question increasingly on the minds of logistics executives everywhere: how do you move AI from pilot projects to real, revenue-generating production?

According to St. Louis Magazine, this year's program is organized by Saint Louis University's Center for Supply Chain Excellence and will feature three speaker sessions, three executive panels, and three practitioner panels, all built around the shift from insight-generating AI tools toward autonomous, agent-driven systems. Registration runs $175 with early-bird discounts available, and speakers and panelists are drawn from 15 global organizations, including Amazon, Apple, Caterpillar, Lowe's, McKinsey, Medline, Staples, UiPath, Wayfair, and World Wide Technology, according to Saint Louis University. The day wraps with an open networking reception at the Busch Student Center, located at 0 N. Grand Blvd.

A Third Year for SLU's AI-Focused Gathering

The Center for Supply Chain Excellence, directed by Vineet Sharma, launched the Tech-Chain event series in October 2024 to explore practical AI applications, followed by a second conference on emerging supply chain technologies in October 2025, per Saint Louis University. This year marks the center's third annual Tech-Chain conference, and it arrives at a moment when the underlying academic program backing it, SLU's Master of Science in Supply Chain Management at the Richard A. Chaifetz School of Business, is consistently ranked among the top 15 graduate supply chain programs in the country by U.S. News & World Report, per the university's own materials.

That academic pedigree gives the conference a degree of regional weight beyond a typical trade show. The Chaifetz School of Business, founded in 1910, is one of the oldest business schools west of the Mississippi, and the center also runs specialized executive education, including an AI in Supply Chain for Leaders course, according to Saint Louis University.

Keynote Speaker's Company Just Split in Two

The conference's keynote falls to Jett McCandless, founder and CEO of project44 and its newly formed sibling company LSP44, who will lead a session titled The Real-Time, Agent-Native Supply Chain. His timing is notable: project44 underwent a major corporate restructuring in July, splitting into two focused entities, with project44 continuing to serve enterprise shippers while LSP44 was spun up as a standalone business delivering AI-native agent infrastructure to third-party logistics providers and freight brokers, according to FreightWaves. Project44 originally launched in 2014 and tracks trillions of dollars in global GDP across 190 countries, per the outlet's reporting.

Elsewhere on the agenda, Paul Lewis, CTO of Pythian, will lead a session called Where to Start With AI, and Amber Salley, founder and managing director of Salley Advisory, will lead a session on the Four Forces Reshaping Supply Chains, per St. Louis Magazine's rundown of the day's programming.

A Local Grocer's Real-World AI Bet

Perhaps the most locally grounded session belongs to Caleb Carr, senior director of data science and engineering at Schnuck Markets, who will lead a talk on Generative AI Use Cases and ROI. His presentation lands against the backdrop of a real deployment already underway: Schnuck Markets, founded in St. Louis in 1939 and operating stores across Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin, partnered with Pythian this year to launch a 12-month AI initiative leveraging Google Cloud's Vertex AI and Gemini Enterprise, according to TechTarget. The project aims to build what the companies describe as an agentic ecosystem capable of automating store workflows like item setup and stock replenishment across the grocer's 111 regional stores.

Why the Industry Is Suddenly Rushing Toward Agents

The stakes behind Tech-Chain's theme are measured in real dollars. Enterprise spending on supply chain management software equipped with agentic AI capabilities is projected to grow from less than $2 billion in 2025 to $53 billion by 2030, according to an April market forecast from Gartner. Software vendors, per that forecast, are shifting away from basic AI assistants toward autonomous multi-agent systems capable of orchestrating multi-step workflows on their own.

Gartner has separately identified agentic AI and physical AI as top supply chain technology trends for 2026, describing a structural shift toward self-directed multi-agent networks that execute both physical and digital operations, leading global supply chains beyond passive data insight into active operational execution, the firm's June research notes. Market analysis from Coherent Market Insights, cited by Fulfillment IQ, shows autonomous decision execution in supply chain operations expanding from 12% of total operational decisions in 2022 to 28% in 2025, with projections estimating it will reach 55% by 2030.

Industry reporting on McKinsey research, also detailed by Fulfillment IQ, found that early adopters of AI-enabled supply chain management achieved a 15% improvement in logistics costs, a 35% reduction in inventory levels, and a 65% boost in service levels compared to slower-moving competitors. Successful adoption, the report notes, requires clean data integration across transportation and warehouse systems.

What It Could Mean for Jobs

The rapid shift toward autonomous execution carries workforce implications that are expected to surface during the conference's executive panels. A survey of 509 global supply chain leaders conducted between July and October 2025 found that 55% expect agentic AI adoption to reduce entry-level hiring needs, while 86% agree it will require companies to fundamentally redesign talent pipelines and organizational roles, according to Gartner's February findings. The same research emphasized human-machine collaboration over simple headcount reduction, framing the transition as a redesign of roles rather than a wholesale replacement of workers.
