A 49-year-old man from St. Michael was killed Saturday night when his pickup truck rolled into a ditch. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the crash report.
The crash happened around 7:45 p.m. Saturday, as reported by Bring Me The News. The Minnesota State Patrol said the driver lost control and rolled the truck into the ditch.
As of the initial report, the state patrol had not publicly released the victim's identity pending family notification, and authorities have disclosed no further information about what caused him to lose control.
A High-Traffic Interchange Built for Freight and Commuters
The Maple Grove junction of I-694, I-94 and I-494 sits at the western end of I-694, which forms the northern arc of the Twin Cities beltway loop, according to Wikipedia. Posted speed limits shift from 70 mph on the outer rural interstates down to 60 mph inside the metro beltway near that junction.
It is the second serious single-vehicle crash involving a St. Michael driver in the Maple Grove area in recent months. In August, a 54-year-old St. Michael resident suffered life-threatening injuries in a separate motorcycle crash on an I-494 ramp in the same city.
Saturday's fatal rollover fits into a broader pattern that state safety officials have been tracking closely. Minnesota's seat belt usage rate reached 94.7 percent in 2024, yet state traffic data from 2017 to 2021 shows unbelted occupants accounted for 52 percent of all vehicle occupant fatalities during that five-year span, according to Meshbesher & Spence.
