New City Microcreamery is closing the doors on its Sudbury scoop shop after four years, trading the 2,000-square-foot space at 534A Boston Post Road in Meadow Walk for a bigger storefront a few miles away at Wayland Town Center. The award-winning small-batch ice cream company known for scratch-made bases and creative flavors like baklava, mint chocolate chip, and salted cookies and cream is capping its Sudbury run with a farewell party on August 30 before the new Wayland location opens in spring 2027.
The move was first detailed by MassLive, which reported that customer feedback influenced New City's decision to seek a larger space and that the company said a bigger footprint would let it expand the experience and add new service offerings. New City did not respond to MassLive's request for comment Monday. According to Patch, the Sudbury location opened in March 2022 inside a space previously occupied by Peet's Coffee, part of the 50-acre Meadow Walk development built on a former Raytheon defense site that also includes 250 apartments, senior housing, and a Whole Foods Market.
A MetroWest Ice Cream Staple With National Recognition
New City Microcreamery has become something of a Massachusetts staple since its founding in 2015, and its accolades back that up. The brand was crowned best ice cream in Massachusetts in a 2018 MassLive poll, and it has since been named one of the best ice cream destinations in New England by Boston Magazine, Eater, and Thrillist, per MassLive's reporting. Central to that reputation is the company's use of liquid nitrogen, chilled to minus 321 degrees Fahrenheit, to rapidly freeze its ice cream base — a technique explained by Edible Boston as a way to prevent large ice crystals from forming, yielding an extra-smooth, dense texture.
The company was founded in Hudson by Karim El-Gamal, Michael Kasseris, and Jason Kleinerman, who had previously opened Rail Trail Flatbread Co. nearby in 2012 as part of a downtown revitalization push. That effort helped downtown Hudson win the national 2021 America's Main Street competition, a milestone Hoodline covered in its report on Hudson's dining resurgence. By April 2026, the hospitality group co-founded by El-Gamal and Kasseris had grown into a nearly $20 million-a-year operation, according to Babson Magazine, employing up to 400 seasonal workers and distributing ice cream to more than 500 grocery stores, including Whole Foods locations across Massachusetts.
Scoop Shops Stretch Across Eastern Massachusetts
Beyond its Hudson flagship, New City currently runs scoop shops in Cambridge, Arlington, Chestnut Hill, and Bolton, having expanded to Cambridge's Central Square back in 2018, per Hoodline's earlier coverage. Once Sudbury closes, Wayland will become the company's newest MetroWest outpost, positioned as a concept the company intends to build into a staple for surrounding communities.
Why Wayland Town Center Made Sense
The new site sits inside Wayland Town Center, a 190,000-square-foot grocery-anchored plaza at 400-440 Boston Post Road anchored by Stop & Shop, according to Summit Realty Partners. The property was acquired for $36 million in late 2025 by Chicago-based Northpond Partners, which has spent 2026 reimagining the center with new retail, dining, and improved connections to the Mass Central Rail Trail, per a local real estate blog tracking the redevelopment. For New City, the larger Wayland space represents both room to grow its menu and a bet on a shopping center actively working to draw more foot traffic along Route 20.
For now, Sudbury regulars have one last chance to say goodbye at the August 30 farewell gathering before the Meadow Walk storefront goes dark. New City has not detailed what will fill the vacancy left behind, but the brand's next chapter down the road in Wayland is expected to open by spring 2027.
