Downtown Los Gatos trades traffic for tasting wristbands this Saturday, Sept. 19, as the Taste of Los Gatos festival returns from noon to 5 p.m., closing Village Lane and North Santa Cruz Avenue between Main Street and Bachman Avenue to vehicles for an afternoon of restaurant bites, winery pours and live music. Organizers expect the crowd to swell to roughly 4,000 people, most of them arriving from beyond town limits.
The event, now in its third year, is put on by the Los Gatos Chamber of Commerce, whose CEO Jennifer Lin has said more than 90% of attendees travel from outside Los Gatos to attend. Admission itself is free, and guests can wander the family activities, carnival games and multiple live-music stages without paying a cent — the cost comes in if you want to eat or drink your way through downtown. As The Mercury News reports, this year's lineup includes more than 50 combined restaurants and wineries, along with a display of vintage and collectible Porsche automobiles and a free photo booth on Grays Lane.
Wristbands, Bites and a Barrel-Poured Pinot
Wristbands, Bites and a Barrel-Poured Pinot Tasting wristbands remain the ticket to the food and drink side of the festival. Per the Chamber's own account, the Bites Wristband runs $80 in advance or $100 on festival day, while the Bites & Wine Wristband adds tastings from roughly 20 participating wineries for $100 in advance or $120 the day of the event. The Chamber's site puts the restaurant count at approximately 30, while The Mercury News frames the combined restaurant-and-winery tally at more than 50.
Wine lovers have one especially rare pour to look for. David Bruce Winery is offering a vertical barrel tasting of Pinot Noir featuring three vintages sampled directly from the cask, according to the same Chamber release. Guests hoping to drink will need to be 21 or older with valid government-issued photo identification, a requirement the Chamber has spelled out for anyone purchasing alcohol or joining the wine tastings.
A New Zone Called Vintage on Village
New this year is Vintage on Village, a pedestrian-only stretch of Village Lane that the Chamber says will feature live jazz, restaurant and wine tastings, and the Chamber Tap Wall. It's one more layer added to a festival that already spans multiple stages of live entertainment, free carnival games and the El Camino Health “Togethering Heals” outdoor climbing wall for families, per the same Chamber account.
Attendees without a wristband still have options — the festival allows purchases of food and drink from the Chamber Cafe, the Chamber Tap Truck, the Tap Wall or local businesses directly, according to details tied to the seed listing for the event. How This Year Compares
The festival's footprint and pricing have shifted year to year. In 2024, the street closure ran along North Santa Cruz Avenue from Main Street to Bachman Avenue on Sept. 14 from 1 to 5 p.m., an hour shorter than this year's noon-to-5 window, and wristbands were considerably cheaper — $45 in advance and $50 on the day of the event, according to a 2024 report from mercurynews.com. By 2025, the event had grown into a $95 Bites and Libations Wristband covering bites from more than 27 restaurants and pours from 20 local wineries, or a $75 Bites Only option, per liveinlosgatosblog.com's rundown of that year's festival.
The festival's growth has coincided with other downtown changes. GOLD Thursday, described as the first activation of Los Gatos' Entertainment Zone, launched May 7 and has run on the first Thursday of every month since, according to nickdelis.com's coverage of the district's evolving rules. Saturday's closures affect the Village Lane and North Santa Cruz Avenue corridor.
