A 17-year-old boy is dead and a 16-year-old is in critical condition after gunfire erupted early Saturday morning near Whiskey Row in downtown Louisville, on East Main Street close to Brook Street. No arrests have been announced in connection with the shooting.
Officials said the older teen was killed and the younger victim was taken to the hospital in critical condition, according to WLKY. The shooting struck one of the city's most closely watched commercial corridors, a stretch of East and West Main Street known as Whiskey Row that dates back to the 1840s as a hub for bourbon distilleries, according to Whisky Advocate. The area has undergone extensive 21st-century revitalization into a major tourism, hotel, and entertainment district, the outlet notes, and the shooting occurred on that corridor.
Louisville Metro Police are asking anyone with information to come forward. Witnesses are encouraged to submit tips through LMPD's crime tip line or its online crime tip portal, and the department's tip line can be reached at 502-574-LMPD (5673).
A Pattern of Youth Gunfire Across the City
The Saturday shooting involved minors. The department's weekly report also addresses non-fatal shootings involving juveniles. That trend has played out in other recent cases involving juveniles and a Louisville teen charged in a Park Hill shooting that injured five people.
Even so, city leaders have pointed to broader signs of improvement. Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg released the city's first annual Safe Louisville report in July, announcing that homicides fell 22% and non-fatal shootings dropped 28% over the past year, according to a statement posted on LouisvilleKY.gov. Youth gun violence is also part of the broader discussion.
Stretched Police Resources and Trauma Response

For critically injured victims like the 16-year-old taken to the hospital, Louisville has built out medical and social support infrastructure in recent years. The city's hospital-based violence intervention partnership with the University of Louisville Hospital Trauma Center engaged 83% of trauma patients admitted for interpersonal violence gunshot or stabbing injuries in 2025, according to WDRB.

Saturday's shooting was reported as a fatal incident. It remains unclear whether the two teens involved in Saturday's shooting knew each other or what led to the gunfire, and police have not said whether surveillance footage from the busy tourist district captured the incident.
