A restaurant sitting where a P.F. Chang's once served Mill Avenue college crowds for 24 years has just been named the best new restaurant in the entire country. Filthy Animal, which opened in Tempe in March 2025, claimed the number one spot on Yelp's 2026 list of the 25 best new restaurants nationwide, edging out celebrated contenders from Los Angeles and New York City.
The ranking, released Tuesday, put Filthy Animal ahead of Los Angeles's Michelin-recognized contemporary Chinese restaurant Firstborn, which landed at number two, and New York City's Mexican dining destination Limusina at number three, according to Forbes. As Phoenix New Times reports, Filthy Animal occupies the former P.F. Chang's location at the bottom of the Mill Avenue entertainment district, close to Arizona State University. California restaurants still managed to claim three of the top five spots on the overall list, per SFGATE.
An Open-Fire Menu With Global Flavor
Filthy Animal's name nods to the famous line from the 1990 movie Home Alone, and executive chef Rene Vargas has built the menu around open-fire wood cooking, Forbes reports. The restaurant's open kitchen lets slabs of meat char over open flames, and the food draws from Asian, Mexican and tropical influences, according to the same Phoenix New Times report.
Diners can expect milk bread with miso tomato butter, tuna pineapple ceviche and beef tartare, per that outlet's reporting. One signature dish sees a whole lobster served over kimchi and sweet corn tteokbokki mac and cheese finished with a house mala sauce — a dish Vargas adapted from a Korean rice-cake concept suggested during menu development, according to Forbes. Yelp reviewers described the restaurant as a thrilling culinary experience and a serious dining destination, per Phoenix New Times.
Curved Booths, Taxidermy And A Hidden Speakeasy
The dining room itself leans into theatrical detail, with curved leather booths, an opulent bar, jungle plants, taxidermied animals and servers dressed in vintage-style tailored dresses, per that same report. Tucked into the same Mill Avenue building is Drop Dead Gorgeous, a 1970s-inspired hidden speakeasy accessible through a separate, concealed entrance, according to Downtown Tempe. The lounge features floral wallpaper, velvet seating, disco lighting and its own distinct cocktail program, that report notes.
Before its national Yelp win, Filthy Animal had already picked up serious local recognition. PHOENIX magazine named it the Best New Restaurant of 2025 back in November, after local food critics evaluated original concepts that opened across Greater Phoenix between October 2024 and September 2025.
From College Dive Bars To A Dining Hub
The P.F. Chang's that previously occupied the 740 South Mill Avenue address shut down in January 2022 after 24 years in business, according to a report from Daily Independent. That closure came as Tempe officials pushed to transition Mill Avenue away from its reputation as a college dive-bar strip and toward an elevated dining scene, with the city launching multi-phase streetscape and infrastructure upgrades along the corridor in 2025, per that same report.
Filthy Animal is operated by Pretty Decent Concepts, the hospitality group behind other Valley spots including Roman God of Fire, Cleaverman, Wren & Wolf, Chico Malo, Carry On, Trophy Room and Drop Dead Gorgeous, per Phoenix New Times. The group was founded by Teddy Myers alongside partners Thor Nguyen and Kaitlin Myers, with menus overseen by Culinary Director Chef Ivan Gonzalez and drinks created by James Beard semifinalist beverage director Jax Donahue, according to A Taste of AZ. The company rebranded from Culture Shock Hospitality in 2017, that outlet notes.
Arizona's Second Entry Comes From A Familiar Name
Filthy Animal wasn't Arizona's only representative on the list — Scottsdale's Society Swan landed at number 14, giving the state two restaurants among the nation's top 25 new openings, per Phoenix New Times. Society Swan is an American brasserie located at Scottsdale Fashion Square, in the former Kona Grill space, according to Write On Rubee, which reports it opened on October 15, 2025, styled as a two-level, French-inspired brasserie modeled after 1960s New York socialites.
Restaurateur Sam Fox is behind Society Swan, according to Phoenix New Times, and Yelp itself described the spot as feeling more like a tucked-away supper club than a mall restaurant. The menu includes fresh oysters, French Quarter salmon, steak fries, lobster carbonara and French onion soup, per that report. The concept marks Fox's first original full-service restaurant since he sold his majority stake in Fox Restaurant Concepts to The Cheesecake Factory for $353 million in 2019, according to PHOENIX magazine, which notes Fox previously built brands including Culinary Dropout, North Italia and Flower Child.
Part Of A Bigger National Shift
Yelp's 2026 dining trend analysis, which evaluated review volume and ratings for restaurants that opened between January 1, 2025, and June 11, 2026, found that diner preferences nationwide have shifted heavily toward live-fire cooking, reimagined steakhouses and globally rooted flavor mashups, according to Forbes. Filthy Animal's win fits squarely into that pattern, and it arrives as local hospitality groups like Pretty Decent Concepts and Fox Restaurant Concepts continue pushing the Valley's dining identity toward more experiential, design-forward and globally inspired concepts, per Phoenix New Times.
The Phoenix New Times report on the honor was written by food editor Tirion Boan, who has covered the Valley's restaurant scene for the outlet since May 2022 after previous stints at the Arizona Republic and the Tucson Weekly.
