A 68-year-old Texas woman was killed Wednesday afternoon when a four-vehicle crash tore through eastbound traffic on Interstate 70 near Lawrence, leaving her husband with serious injuries and two other drivers with only minor harm. Linda Taliaferro, of Lubbock, Texas, was pronounced dead at the scene after the collision, which struck about four miles east of the Tonganoxie-Eudora exit in Leavenworth County.
According to WIBW, the crash was reported at 1:33 p.m. Wednesday on eastbound I-70 along the Kansas Turnpike, where traffic had already stopped ahead of the pileup. Per the Kansas Highway Patrol's official crash log, a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu driven by 19-year-old Jayden Ramirez of Shawnee, Kansas, struck a 2015 GMC Acadia that had stopped for traffic, setting off a chain reaction that pushed the Acadia into a 2014 Ford Escape, which then collided with a 2000 Kenworth semitrailer.
Linda Taliaferro was a passenger in the GMC Acadia, which her husband, 68-year-old David Taliaferro, also of Lubbock, was driving. David Taliaferro was transported to the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas, with serious injuries, the station reports.
Everyone Was Belted, But Not Everyone Survived
Every person involved in the crash was wearing a seat belt, the station's report notes, including Ramirez, Sina Stanford, and semitrailer driver Jeremy Domme. Kansas law under K.S.A. § 8-2503, per the Kansas Office of Revisor of Statutes, requires all occupants of passenger vehicles age 14 and older to buckle up whenever a vehicle is moving on public roads. Complete restraint compliance among all five people in the four vehicles still could not prevent a fatal outcome once the rear-end force multiplied through the chain of impacts.
Stanford, 26, of Independence, Kansas, was driving alone in the Ford Escape and was reported to have suspected minor injuries; no record of hospital transport for her appears in the Kansas Highway Patrol's online crash log. Ramirez, who was alone in the Malibu, also suffered suspected minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital, per the same account. Domme, 42, of Topeka, was alone in the semitrailer and was reported uninjured.
A Familiar Stretch Of Highway
The section of eastbound I-70 near Bonner Springs in Leavenworth County has seen deadly pileups before. A February 2025 four-vehicle collision in the same corridor left one person dead and three others injured, according to JC Post. The area sits along a stretch of the Kansas Turnpike east of Lawrence near Stranger Creek, just west of the former Eastern Terminal toll plaza site near Bonner Springs, according to AARoads — a corridor where high-speed traffic approaching sudden slowdowns has long created severe rear-end impact risks.
What specifically brought eastbound traffic to a stop just before 1:33 p.m. Wednesday remains unclear, and Kansas Highway Patrol has not said whether speed or distraction played a role in the initial impact. It is also not yet known whether troopers will issue citations or file charges once the agency completes its crash reconstruction report.
A Statewide Push To Cut Traffic Deaths
The crash comes as Kansas transportation officials tout progress on highway safety. As of September 1, the state had recorded 220 traffic fatalities for 2026, an 11.29 percent decrease from the same point last year, according to preliminary data from the Kansas Department of Transportation. The agency's Drive to Zero initiative aims to eliminate fatal and serious injury crashes statewide through enforcement, engineering, and emergency response improvements.
State agencies also rolled out the Kansas Crash Data System in July, a modernized digital platform built to standardize how law enforcement agencies report crashes, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol. Officers are required to submit crash investigation reports to KDOT within 10 days, meaning a fuller account of Wednesday's collision could still be forthcoming.
Wednesday's crash marks the latest in a string of serious incidents along this stretch of I-70 that Hoodline has tracked in recent weeks, including an ejected driver critical after Camry crash in a nearby work zone. No further updates on David Taliaferro's condition or the investigation's outcome had been released as of Thursday.
