Downtown Mason development context
The RARE is planned for 128 East Main Street as Mason pursues longer-term changes along the Mason Mile corridor. The City of Mason committed a $3.5 million capacity-building grant over five years to MADE Community Development Corporation for implementation of the revitalization plan, according to MADE CDC. Mason City Council adopted the 20-year Mason Mile Master Plan in November 2025 to guide business expansion, safety improvements, and pedestrian infrastructure between Reading Road and Main Street.
Downtown also has a Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area. Under the city’s rules, customers who are at least 21 can carry drinks purchased from participating establishments in designated cups within the district, according to the City of Mason.
Rehabilitating an older building
Nikki and Josh Logsdon are renovating a 150-year-old brick building for The RARE instead of replacing it, WCPO 9 News reported. Demolition began in January. A Facebook post documenting the work said crews removed six layers of drywall, wood paneling, furring strips, and plaster before finding the original brick interior.
The restaurant’s name was inspired by the building’s charm and character, according to WCPO. Plans also call for an upstairs event space with elevator access, in addition to the ground-floor restaurant.
Kitchen plans and opening target
Max Wagner is set to serve as executive chef. A Facebook post about his background identified him as the former executive chef at Pepp & Delores in Cincinnati’s Over-the-Rhine neighborhood. WCPO reported that The RARE’s menu will follow an American-bistro approach and include a Cincinnati chili dish made with braised short rib and aged cheddar.
Mechanical work is continuing as the Logsdons target a November opening, WCPO reported. The project will therefore bring a new dining business to a rehabilitated downtown property while Mason advances its broader Mason Mile plans.
