Crews at the scene had to perform an extraction to free one of the involved drivers, who was pulled from a vehicle before being taken for treatment. That driver sustained what was described as minor injuries, per the outlet's reporting.
A child involved in the crash was transported to Harborview Medical Center, according to an image caption included in the outlet's coverage. Harborview, located in Seattle and operated by UW Medicine, is Washington's only designated Level I trauma center equipped to treat both adults and children, according to UW Medicine. Albany Street SW functions as a key local collector road running parallel to the highway, giving drivers a way around the blockage while crews worked the scene.
US 12 stretches more than 300 miles across Washington, linking coastal Grays Harbor County through Thurston County before reaching Interstate 5 at Grand Mound, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation. The corridor carries heavy daily commuter and freight traffic between Aberdeen and I-5, making any full closure a significant disruption for regional travel.
A Corridor With a Troubled Safety Record
Tuesday's crash adds to a pattern of serious collisions along this stretch of highway. A Thurston Regional Planning Council study documented 226 traffic accidents in the Grand Mound area between 2014 and 2018, with US 12 accounting for the highest concentration at 78 incidents — more than a third of which resulted in injuries or fatalities.
Countywide, the numbers tell a similar story. Thurston County recorded 34 fatal collisions and 166 serious injury crashes between 2019 and 2023, prompting officials to develop a localized Transportation Safety Action Plan under the federal Safe Streets for All program. Regional planners reported in May that traffic fatalities and serious injuries in Thurston County continue climbing, pushing the county further from the state's safety targets, according to The JOLT News. Drivers accounted for nearly half of all severe traffic injuries recorded in the region.
Statewide, lane departure and multi-vehicle crashes rose 39% between 2019 and 2023, according to WSDOT's Strategic Highway Safety Plan metrics. That trend runs counter to Washington's Target Zero campaign, which aims to eliminate traffic fatalities across the state by 2030.
Local Infrastructure Changes Continue Near Grand Mound
Thurston County and WSDOT have already made some infrastructure changes near the crash site, completing a new roundabout at US 12 and Sargent Road to help manage shifting traffic volumes in the Grand Mound area. Closures like Tuesday's require coordination between WSP troopers on scene and WSDOT crews managing detour routes, since the agencies rely on real-time monitoring and joint dispatch to route drivers around blocked highways.
Tuesday's wreck is at least the third notable crash Hoodline has covered along this stretch of highway this year, following a fatal median-jump crash in July and a hit-and-run death reported in March. The extent of injuries from Tuesday's crash beyond the minor injuries reported for one driver, and the condition of the child taken to Harborview, had not been detailed as of the outlet's report.
