Hikers hoping to catch sunset views along Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve have just days left before the gates close. Starting Tuesday, the reserve will be temporarily closed to all visitors as crews move into the next phase of a multi-year project to upgrade utilities, replace a restroom building and improve accessibility.
According to Fox 5 San Diego and KUSI News, the closure begins September 22 and will shut down both upper parking lots and all trails at the reserve, which sits between La Jolla and Del Mar, according to California State Parks. Vehicles will be barred from entering, and the beach trail staircase will also be closed during the shutdown. The reserve's lodge and trail interpretive kiosk will close for the season as well.
Beachgoers, however, won't be shut out entirely. Torrey Pines State Beach will remain open during the reserve closure, and both the north and south beach parking areas will stay accessible even while the trails above sit off-limits, the outlet reports.
What Crews Are Actually Building
The current shutdown marks phase two of the project, following a four-month construction closure that began in November 2025 and wrapped with the reserve reopening in March 2026. Phase one construction focused on underground utility upgrades, and phase two picks up where that work left off starting the same week the new closure takes effect.
The utility improvements include new gas, water, wastewater and communication lines running through the reserve, per the report. Accessibility upgrades planned as part of the project include updated accessible parking stalls and a new accessible pedestrian path connecting the upper parking lot to the restroom and lodge.
California State Parks has said the closure will allow the agency to continue those utility improvements. The state agency reported that the shutdown is tied directly to the broader improvement projects underway at the site.

For visitors looking to fill the gap, California State Parks says 28 other state parks sit within 50 miles of Torrey Pines, offering plenty of alternatives while the reserve's trails remain closed.
The reserve is scheduled to reopen in March 2027, per California State Parks. In its statement, the agency said it thanks visitors for their patience and support during these critical improvements, and separately thanked visitors for their patience and support during the ongoing work.
