According to the Fresno Police Department, a ShotSpotter notification reported one round fired near the intersection, prompting officers already working in the Tower District to respond within moments. Homicide detectives have since determined that a verbal disturbance occurred near Olive and Linden avenues, though the department has not released further detail on what preceded the gunfire. Miles was struck once before Fresno Fire and EMS personnel worked to save him at the scene, per the same department account.

A Familiar Corner for Fresno Police
This is not the first time this exact stretch of Olive and Linden avenues has drawn a police response this year. Four months earlier, on Sunday, May 24, 2026, officers responded to the same intersection after two ShotSpotter activations indicated multiple rounds, according to the Fresno Police Department. The shooting left a 32-year-old man with a leg wound. Three subjects were arrested after a vehicle fled east on Highway 180 and a firearm was tossed from the vehicle.
The Tower District, anchored by the landmark 1939 Art Deco Tower Theatre, is associated with nightlife and live entertainment. As KVPR has reported, the neighborhood grew out of an early 20th-century streetcar suburb.
The technology that flagged Saturday's shooting is part of a citywide ShotSpotter acoustic detection network covering 17 square miles across all five of Fresno's policing districts, pinpointing gunfire within feet and alerting officers even without a 911 call. Department records show that roughly 70% of ShotSpotter alerts in Fresno never generate a corresponding call from residents, according to GV Wire.

Other Recent Fresno Shootings
Other violent incidents have also occurred in Fresno in recent weeks. Earlier this month, a 17-year-old was shot multiple times near Fresno State and killed, and suspects ages 20 and 16 were arrested. Packard was arrested on September 23, more than a week after the September 12 killing. In August, a shooting suspect on Olive Avenue was arrested after ramming an undercover Fresno police car, in connection with an earlier shooting at an Olive Avenue birthday party.
