Two people are in critical condition after being shot while driving on Interstate 25 near Loveland early Monday, in an attack police say may have been targeted rather than random. The gunfire was discovered only after an iPhone crash notification alerted emergency dispatchers to a wreck near the Eisenhower Boulevard off-ramp just after midnight.
Loveland police were investigating the shooting of the two people while they were driving on I-25 near Loveland, according to the Loveland Reporter-Herald. The Loveland Emergency Communications Center received the automated crash alert near the interstate and the Eisenhower Boulevard off-ramp, and a dispatcher reportedly heard a commotion but had limited information about what had actually occurred. When officers arrived and contacted the occupants of the only vehicle at the scene, they discovered both people had gunshot wounds.
Both victims were transported to a hospital, where they remain in critical condition with life-threatening injuries, the Reporter-Herald reports. Police believe the pair were shot on the interstate near the location of the crash, meaning the gunfire itself may have preceded or caused the wreck as the vehicle approached the Eisenhower off-ramp.
