Two people were shot in a West Phoenix neighborhood shortly before 6 a.m. Tuesday, with one victim rushed to the hospital as investigators taped off the area near 79th Drive and Indian School Road. Residents and drivers were asked to avoid the area while police worked the scene.
According to Arizona's Family, authorities confirmed that two people were shot, though the condition of the victims had not been released as of Tuesday morning. Arizona's Family News Chopper captured video of a large police presence, with numerous Phoenix police SUVs parked in front of a home in the neighborhood. Investigators said they were still working to determine what led up to the incident.
A Familiar Intersection for Gun Violence
The shooting unfolded in Maryvale, one of Phoenix's largest urban villages and a densely populated, mid-century residential area within the 85033 ZIP code, according to property records reviewed by Trulia. It is not the first time gunfire has erupted at this exact intersection. In November 2020, a 14-year-old boy was critically wounded at 79th Drive and Indian School Road when a firearm accidentally discharged inside a home, as reported by 12News; a 16-year-old acquaintance was later arrested in connection with that earlier shooting.
Tuesday's shooting also fits a broader, troubling pattern along the West Indian School Road corridor this year. Hoodline previously reported on a fatal shooting near 83rd Avenue in April, and a non-fatal predawn shooting near 43rd Avenue in February. Just over a week earlier, on August 30, Hoodline covered another non-fatal Maryvale shooting that left a man seriously hurt and one person detained.
Maryvale's Outsized Share of Violent Crime
The Maryvale Estrella Precinct, which covers roughly 76 square miles and serves about 305,000 residents, handles approximately 20% of all police radio calls and 20% of all reported violent crime citywide, according to the Howard Center for Investigative Journalism. Between 2017 and 2024, officers assigned to the precinct used force at least once every other day on average, the highest rate of any precinct in the city, and the area accounted for nearly one in five police shootings citywide, per the same report.
That intensity of police activity comes as the Phoenix Police Department grapples with a staffing shortfall of more than 500 sworn officers below its authorized strength, contributing to roughly $98 million in annual overtime spending to keep patrol shifts covered, according to the Arizona Capitol Times. Priority 1 emergency calls, the category that includes active shootings, average between 6 and 9 minutes citywide amid the ongoing patrol vacancies.
Investigation Ongoing, No Arrests Announced
As of Tuesday, no suspect identities, motive, or arrest had been announced in connection with the shooting, and investigators continued working to piece together what led up to the incident. Despite the recurring violence in pockets of West Phoenix, citywide homicides fell by roughly 28% in 2024 compared to previous peak years, according to City of Phoenix crime data, even as neighborhoods like Maryvale continue to grapple with localized shootings.
