A University of Georgia student is recovering after falling eight stories from an apartment window near campus, landing on the pool deck below her building. Athens-Clarke County police say the young woman was dancing on a couch near an open window shortly before 8 p.m. Saturday when she lost her balance and fell.
The incident happened at Rambler Athens, an off-campus luxury student housing complex at 558 West Broad Street near downtown Athens and the UGA campus, according to FOX 5 Atlanta. Athens-Clarke County Police spokesperson Lt. Katie Jenkins said the student lost her balance while dancing on the couch before falling eight stories onto the pool deck, as reported by Classic City News. She was transported to a hospital, and officials say she remains conscious and alert but seriously injured. Authorities have not released her identity.
According to CBS News Atlanta, the apartment building sits close to the University of Georgia campus, and the fall was first reported as occurring at an apartment complex on West Broad Street.
A Newly Built Luxury Complex
Rambler Athens was completed in August 2024, making the building just over two years old at the time of the fall. The eight-story, 600,000-square-foot development contains 342 to 344 residential units with 750 total beds, and was developed by LV Collective and designed by architectural firm Niles Bolton Associates, the same source notes.
The courtyard at Rambler Athens includes a pool. A spokesperson for Rambler Athens said, “Our thoughts are with the resident and their family,” and said the property is grateful she is receiving medical treatment and is actively reviewing the circumstances surrounding the fall, per the same FOX 5 Atlanta report.
Window Safety Rules for High-Rise Housing
The fall raises questions about window safety standards in multi-family buildings like Rambler Athens. Under Section 1015.8 of the International Building Code, operable windows in multi-family residential structures with sill heights under 36 inches located more than 72 inches above exterior grade must include window fall prevention devices, opening limiters restricting openings to under 4 inches, or compliance with ASTM F2090, according to the International Code Council.
The building's scale also reflects the booming private student housing market surrounding UGA. In April 2025, commercial lender Mesa West Capital originated a $133.9 million mortgage to refinance Rambler Athens, a deal that Multi-Housing News said reflected high demand and rising per-bed rental rates in the UGA off-campus housing market.

The incident also lands amid a broader, years-long push by the university to bolster student safety. WSB-TV Channel 2 reported that more than $16 million had been dedicated to security measures over the preceding eight years and separately reported approval of more than $7 million in new measures in 2024. No further details on the student's condition or the status of any investigation into the fall have been released.
