Two people accused of storming a Valley Center home with a handgun and a machete were arrested early Saturday after deputies conducted a lengthy search for their stolen getaway vehicle. Adam Wilson, 28, and Niquoia Thurber, 53, now face charges of robbery, residential burglary and auto theft following the overnight incident, which began with a home invasion call around 12:30 a.m. in the 31000 block of Willow View Lane.
According to the Valley Roadrunner, investigators say Wilson and Thurber drove a stolen vehicle to the Willow View Lane residence, where Wilson allegedly threatened residents with a handgun and a machete. The pair then allegedly left the home with the victim's property, according to the outlet's account of the investigation. Deputies also recovered weapons and the victim's personal property during the case, per the same report.
Investigators leaned on the county's Automated License Plate Reader network to locate the stolen vehicle and determine its possible direction of travel, the paper reports. The system, which combines fixed intersection cameras with patrol-car mounted readers across San Diego County, is designed to flag stolen vehicles against law enforcement hotlists in real time, according to the Electronic Frontier Foundation.
Arrests Made Miles Away on West Oak Glen Road
The search led deputies to the 13000 block of West Oak Glen Road, where both suspects were arrested in the early morning hours. Deputies observed Thurber in the stolen vehicle before taking her into custody, while Wilson was apprehended in the same area, the Valley Roadrunner reports.
A North County student arrest also prompted lockdowns at two high schools, according to CBS 8 San Diego.
A Vast Rural Beat for Deputies
The Valley Center Sheriff's Substation is responsible for roughly 333 square miles of unincorporated North County territory, per federal records archived by GovInfo. Property crime, including vehicle theft and burglary, remains the dominant category of crime in Valley Center's unincorporated pockets, according to crime-mapping site DoorProfit.
Both Wilson and Thurber were booked into Vista Detention Facility on charges of robbery, residential burglary and auto theft. The North County jail, built in 1978, is currently the subject of a roughly $1 billion overhaul amid aging infrastructure concerns, according to The Coast News Group.
