A 36-year-old Versailles woman was killed Thursday morning when her SUV slammed into the back of a tractor-trailer on Interstate 64 West in Woodford County, state police said. Christine Wilson was pronounced dead at the scene near the 61-mile marker, right where heavy traffic backed up ahead of an active construction zone.
According to LEX 18 News, Kentucky State Police say the crash happened around 9:45 a.m. Thursday when Wilson's white GMC SUV, traveling in the right westbound lane, struck the rear of a semi-truck. The truck's driver, 47-year-old James Calvin of Wentzville, Missouri, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Both westbound lanes of I-64 were shut down while crews processed the scene before reopening, and officials said the investigation remains ongoing.
A Construction Zone With a Deadly History
Thursday's wreck happened outside the footprint of a $14 million Kentucky Transportation Cabinet rehabilitation project extending from milepoint 64.8 to 74, a stretch of Woodford, Fayette, and Scott counties slated for lane closures through November, according to a Kentucky Transportation Cabinet bulletin. Heavy traffic slowed near the work zone that morning, setting up the conditions for the SUV's rear-end impact with the tractor-trailer, per the same bulletin.
The location carries grim familiarity for the corridor. Almost exactly one year earlier, on September 12, 2025, a semi-truck plowed into traffic queued by construction at the same 61-mile marker on westbound I-64, triggering a multi-vehicle pileup that killed three people and injured three others, according to Kentucky State Police. That crash involved four commercial trucks and two passenger cars.
Lawsuit Over Last Year's Pileup Still Pending
The fallout from that 2025 crash is still working its way through the courts. A lawsuit filed in March accuses a commercial truck driver of speeding, driving distracted, and operating while fatigued after exceeding federal hours-of-service limits, according to FOX 56 News. The suit targets Ohio-based Hillsboro Transportation Company. What The Law Requires Near Work Zones
Kentucky law places a clear duty on drivers approaching queued or slowing traffic. Under KRS 189.390(2), motorists are prohibited from driving faster than is reasonable and prudent for existing traffic, weather, and roadway conditions, regardless of the posted limit, per Cherokee Schill.
