A missing juvenile search that began near Lamar Moody Park in Villa Rica ended more than two years later with a Carroll County courtroom sentencing that will keep the man responsible behind bars for decades. Nicholas Hallstrom pleaded guilty on August 26 to a six-count indictment tied to a sexual assault investigation that grew out of a frantic search for a teenage girl who had gone missing from Walton County, Georgia.
The case started on May 24, 2024, when the Walton County Sheriff's Office alerted Carroll County deputies that the missing teen might be near Lamar Moody Park off Lake Paradise Road, according to FOX 5 Atlanta. Patrol deputies searched the park but were initially unable to locate her. Carroll County deputies then sent out an alert asking the public to help find the missing girl, according to reporting from CBS Atlanta.
The break in the case came at around 6:40 a.m. that same morning, when two travelers driving from Alabama spotted the girl walking alone along Interstate 20 and called Carroll County E-911, per the same FOX 5 Atlanta account. Sgt. Repetto, Villa Rica police officers, and Walton County deputies responded to the scene and confirmed her identity, and the young girl found on the interstate was confirmed as the missing juvenile, according to CBS Atlanta's reporting.
From Missing Person Case to Sexual Assault Investigation
What began as a missing-child search quickly turned into something far more serious. Investigators identified Nicholas Hallstrom as the person who had picked up the girl earlier that morning, and uncovered evidence that the encounter was sexual in nature, the FOX 5 Atlanta report states. Hallstrom confessed to his actions during an interview with Sgt. Repetto, according to The Georgia Gazette.
Investigators in Walton County obtained initial arrest warrants before transferring Hallstrom to the Carroll County Jail on June 3, 2024, the same reporting notes. He was ultimately charged with two counts of child molestation, aggravated sexual battery, enticing a child for indecent purposes, second-degree cruelty to children, and statutory rape, per CBS Atlanta.
Guilty Plea Brings 50-Year Sentence
On August 26, Hallstrom entered a guilty plea in Carroll County Superior Court to the full six-count indictment, according to WSB-TV. He was sentenced to a total of 50 years, with 30 years to be served in state prison, WSB-TV reported. Deputies said the more than two-year search and investigation ultimately ended with Hallstrom's prison sentence, according to CBS Atlanta.
Under Georgia Code § 16-6-22.2, aggravated sexual battery — one of Hallstrom's primary charges — carries a mandatory statutory sentence ranging from 25 years to life, and a minor under 16 cannot legally consent as a defense, according to Justia Law. Separately, statutory rape involving an offender age 21 or older carries a mandatory 10-to-20-year state prison term under Georgia Code § 16-6-3, with at least 10 years required before parole eligibility, per Gabe T. Lifelong Registration and an Unanswered Question
Because his convictions include aggravated sexual battery, child molestation, and enticing a child for indecent purposes, Hallstrom will face mandatory lifelong registration on the Georgia Sex Offender Registry once released, under Georgia Code § 42-1-12, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Registrants are required to keep their address and employment information updated with local sheriffs' offices for the rest of their lives.
Lamar Moody Park, where the initial search unfolded, is a 133-acre municipal park at 2377 Lake Paradise Road featuring an 8-acre fishing lake, situated adjacent to Interstate 20 near the Carroll County line, according to the City of Villa Rica. The case also illustrates the geographic scale investigators had to cover: Walton County sits on the eastern edge of metro Atlanta while Carroll County lies roughly 80 miles away on the western edge, connected by the I-20 corridor, per WSB-TV's reporting.
Despite the sentencing, authorities have not publicly disclosed how Hallstrom originally established contact with the victim before picking her up that morning, FOX 5 Atlanta reported, leaving that detail of the case unresolved even as his prison term begins.
