New York City is waking up Saturday to light rain, fog and a sharp chill, with temperatures around 56 degrees and north winds already gusting into the 40s. The weekend forecast is now a serious one: prolonged rain, powerful winds and coastal flooding are expected across the city through Sunday.
The National Weather Service has issued a Coastal Flood Warning for Manhattan through 6 p.m. Sunday and a Wind Advisory through early Sunday morning. Gusts could reach 55 mph, while vulnerable waterfront areas may see 1 to 2 feet of inundation above ground level, according to the National Weather Service.
Saturday Turns Colder, Wetter And Windier
Rain is expected through Saturday, with a high near 63 degrees before temperatures slip toward the mid-50s during the afternoon. North winds of 28 to 36 mph could make the city feel considerably colder, with gusts near 46 mph and rainfall totals of roughly a quarter-inch to a half-inch.
Rain will continue Saturday night, when a slight chance of thunderstorms enters the forecast. Another three-quarters to 1 inch of rain could fall overnight, adding to the risk of water collecting on roads and in poor-drainage areas.
Waterfront Neighborhoods Face The Biggest Trouble
Flooding is expected around high tide near the shoreline, including vulnerable roads, parking lots, parks and properties with basements. Some road closures are likely, and officials are warning drivers not to go around barricades or drive through water of unknown depth.
Sunday brings more rain showers, a high near 67 degrees and northeast winds gusting as high as 39 mph. Ocean beaches will also face dangerous surf, rip currents and erosion through Sunday, making this a poor weekend for waterfront walks or getting anywhere near the water.
Monday Finally Starts The Slow Reset
Showers could linger Monday, with a high near 68 degrees and lighter winds. The forecast improves sharply Tuesday, when partly sunny skies and a high near 72 arrive, followed by mostly sunny conditions in the mid-70s Wednesday through Friday.
The latest forecast is a substantive update to Friday's Hoodline forecast, with the coastal flood threat upgraded to a warning and the weekend storm now expected to bring heavier, longer-lasting impacts across New York City.
