A shooting near West St. Louis Street and Eisenhower in west Wichita left one person with critical injuries Monday evening, according to Sedgwick County dispatch. The incident happened around 5:40 p.m. near I-235 and Central, in an area patrolled by the Wichita Police Department's Patrol West Division.
Sedgwick County dispatch reported that one person was found at the scene with critical injuries, according to KAKE. The station said it was sending a crew to the scene to gather additional details. As of the initial report, the identity of the victim, any suspect information, and a possible motive had not been released.
Calls involving life-threatening trauma, like a shooting victim found with critical injuries, are classified by Sedgwick County Emergency Communications as Priority “E” or Priority “1.” The county's 911 center is the primary public safety answering point and serves 32 agencies.

The victim was taken to a local hospital, although the hospital was not identified, and police later said the victim was in stable condition.
Investigators believed a juvenile was negligently handling a firearm when it discharged and struck the victim. The initial report did not detail the legal standards that might apply to the shooting. It also did not discuss Kansas concealed-carry requirements.
A Pattern of Recent Shootings in West Wichita
Monday's shooting follows a string of other violent incidents that have rattled west Wichita in recent weeks. In August, an accidental shooting in the western part of the city left a 20-year-old critically injured and prompted a multi-agency response, with two minors cooperating with officers during that investigation. In August 2025, a shooting at Towne East Square left two teenagers critically injured, and multiple suspects were arrested. Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan publicly expressed alarm over community gun violence.
The violence comes even as statewide crime figures moved in the opposite direction. Kansas crime overall dropped by roughly 5% in 2025, reaching its lowest total index rate in 57 years with 66,947 total index offenses statewide, according to the Sunflower State Journal. Locally, though, comparable Wichita crime totals were not provided.
No arrests have been announced in connection with Monday's shooting, and the Wichita Police Department has not released further details on the victim's identity. This story will be updated as more information becomes available from law enforcement.
