A woman in her 30s was fatally stabbed Sunday afternoon near the intersection of Woodward Avenue and East Congress Street in Downtown Detroit, according to Detroit police. The attack happened at approximately 2:30 p.m. in one of the city's busiest commercial corridors. The male suspect fled the stabbing scene and was taken into custody near Woodward Avenue and State Street in Detroit.
The stabbing was reported by WDIV ClickOnDetroit, which cited the Detroit Police Department in its account of the timeline and the suspect's arrest. The Detroit Police Department is investigating the fatal stabbing, and a motive has not been disclosed. The case remains a developing story.
A Civic Landmark Turned Crime Scene
The intersection where the stabbing occurred sits at the center of Downtown Detroit's business district, directly adjacent to One Woodward Avenue, according to Explorest.
The corridor was also the site of a fatal shooting earlier this month, when a 27-year-old store manager was killed inside a retail clothing shop along Woodward Avenue, as Hoodline reported at the time.
Detroit's Homicide Numbers Keep Falling
The stretch of Woodward Avenue now includes two fatal attacks within roughly ten days, even as citywide violence continues an extended decline.
Detroit recorded 165 criminal homicides in 2025, an 18.7% drop from 2024, marking the city's lowest annual murder total since 1965, according to the City of Detroit.
