A driver accused of steering a stolen Jeep the wrong way down Interstate 75 led officers on a chase that stretched from the highway into a Miamisburg field, where a police drone helped corner him. Darion Johnson was arrested after the high-speed pursuit, which involved multiple Ohio police agencies and the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
According to WKRC, Johnson was driving a Jeep that had been stolen from a home in Kentucky when Franklin police and Middletown police spotted the vehicle. Franklin police then joined the Ohio State Highway Patrol in pursuing the driver on I-75, with police saying the vehicle traveled the wrong way on the interstate during the pursuit.
Chase Ends on Foot Near a Miamisburg Hotel
Police say the driver eventually led officers into Miamisburg, Ohio, bailing out of the Jeep on State Route 725. From there, the station's report notes, Johnson took off running rather than surrendering to the officers who had been trailing him for miles.
That is when a drone entered the picture. Officers and the drone together tracked down the driver in a field south of the La Quinta Inn on Byers Road, ending the chase without further incident, per the same account.
Charges Filed Against Darion Johnson
Johnson now faces charges of failure to comply, receiving stolen property and obstructing official business, according to the report. A separate account from WHIO similarly identified Johnson as the driver who fled on foot on SR-725, noting that a Warren County Sheriff's Office drone assisted in his capture.
