A 19-year-old woman was hospitalized Friday morning after being shot in South Macon, with Bibb County Sheriff's Office deputies finding her wounded in the 4100 block of Houston Avenue around 11:30 a.m. Emergency responders treated her at the scene before taking her to a local hospital, where she is now listed in stable condition.
The Bibb County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded to the call Friday morning and discovered the teenager had been shot, according to 13WMAZ. The sheriff's office's Criminal Investigation Division is now working to determine what led up to the shooting, and officials said that was all the information available at the time. No details about a potential suspect or motive have been released.
A Corridor With a History of Violence
Friday's shooting is not the first time gunfire has struck this stretch of South Macon in 2026. Less than three months earlier, on July 26, a 20-year-old man was critically injured in a shooting in the adjacent 4200 block of Houston Avenue near Burke Street, with deputies responding to shots fired around 5:37 a.m. before learning the victim had already been driven to a hospital in a private vehicle, the research dossier notes citing local reporting. And in June, a 46-year-old woman was shot and critically injured during an early morning shooting along Houston Road, with deputies responding around 7 a.m. and paramedics transporting her to a local medical facility, according to reporting cited in the dossier. The pattern stretches back further still — in 2018, a 22-year-old gang member was sentenced to 20 years, with the first eight years in prison and the remainder under probation conditions, after pleading guilty to a 2016 drive-by shooting near Villa Crest Avenue and Houston Avenue that left an innocent 28-year-old pedestrian shot in the face, with prosecutors at the time emphasizing that such shootings along public streets endanger entire neighborhoods, per Macon-Bibb County Government.
Part of a Broader Spike in Non-Fatal Shootings
Friday's shooting adds to a troubling citywide pattern of violence. Aggravated assaults, the category that covers most non-fatal shootings, surged 22% in 2025 to 1,732 cases, a decade high, with nearly 80% involving firearms, according to FBI data reported by The Macon Telegraph in September.
September brought a string of multi-victim, non-fatal shootings involving young people across the city. Five men between 18 and 24 were shot at the intersection of Anthony Road and Mercer University Drive, all of whom drove themselves to area emergency rooms after ShotSpotter technology alerted 911 dispatchers, according to The Georgia Sun. Days later, a mass shooting during a birthday celebration at Carolyn Crayton Park left 12 teenagers and young adults wounded, a case that led to the arrest of seven suspects between 15 and 24 years old by mid-October, with investigators from the sheriff's office and U.S. Marshals seizing 10 firearms during the investigation, FOX 5 Atlanta reported.
County Leaders Point to Prevention Investments
Macon-Bibb County has invested in public safety and community-led violence prevention through the Macon Violence Prevention program.
No arrests have been announced in Friday's shooting, and the Bibb County Sheriff's Office has not released information about a suspect or what prompted the gunfire. Hoodline previously reported on the Carolyn Crayton Park shooting that left a dozen teens wounded, as well as the earlier shooting that injured five men on Anthony Road, two of several violent incidents that have shaped Macon's 2026.
