A 20-year-old man was shot on Cleveland's West Side Thursday afternoon, and by the time officers finished interviewing him at the hospital, the man accused of pulling the trigger had already walked into a police station to turn himself in. Police say the relationship between the two men remains unknown, and detectives are still piecing together what happened near Pearl Road and Garden Avenue in the Brooklyn Centre neighborhood.
According to Cleveland 19 News, officers responded around 3:07 p.m. Thursday to the area of Pearl Road and Garden Avenue after a report of a shooting. When they arrived, they found a 20-year-old male already receiving medical attention from EMS crews for gunshot wounds. EMS told officers the victim was in stable condition before he was transported to a hospital for treatment.
Suspect Surrenders While Police Question Victim
While officers were at the hospital interviewing the victim about what happened, a 28-year-old man turned himself in at Cleveland's Second District station. Officers took him into custody at that point and transported him to the county jail, the station's report indicates. Police have not said what prompted the man to come forward or what led up to the shooting in the first place.
Investigators said the relationship between the two men involved is unknown at this time, and the circumstances that led to the shooting have not been disclosed. Detectives are continuing to investigate the incident, and no further information was available as of the report's publication.
A Familiar Scene on Cleveland's West Side
Shootings involving young men on Cleveland's West Side have surfaced in local coverage before. In July, a 19-year-old man was hospitalized after a shooting in the nearby Old Brooklyn neighborhood, with police responding just before 5:30 a.m. to the 1900 block of Mayview Avenue, according to cleveland.com. Paramedics in that case took the victim to MetroHealth Medical Center, and additional details about what led to that shooting were never released.
As with Thursday's shooting near Pearl Road and Garden Avenue, that earlier case ended with police offering few answers about motive or circumstance. For now, the Brooklyn Centre case remains an open investigation, with detectives working to determine what connects, or doesn't connect, the 20-year-old victim and the 28-year-old man who turned himself in.
