A 23-year-old woman was shot at Fox Ridge Apartments in Kalamazoo Thursday evening and taken to a hospital, where she is expected to survive. The shooting happened in the 1400 block of Fox Ridge Drive, just three days after an 18-year-old woman was fatally shot at the same complex.
The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety is investigating the shooting, according to WWMT, which reported the incident happened sometime around 8 p.m. Thursday. MLive, however, reported that police were called to the scene shortly before 6:20 p.m. that evening. The injured woman was transported to a nearby hospital for further medical treatment, per the same MLive report.
Police have not said whether they believe this shooting is connected to the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Amaure’ Dora-Lee Lynniah Harris, who was killed at Fox Ridge Apartments on Sept. 28, the outlet's report notes. That earlier case has already shaken the complex and the surrounding neighborhood, with police describing it as part of a cycle of retaliatory violence.
A Killing Rooted in Retaliation
Police said Harris's death was retaliation for the shooting death of Latraysa Brown on Sept. 27, according to FOX 17. Brown was inside a home in the 100 block of Reed Avenue, near South Burdick Street, when she was shot multiple times and later died at the hospital, the same report states.
A 19-year-old man was identified as a suspect in Harris's death and was taken into custody in the 3700 block of East Cork Street, FOX 17 reported. Separately, an 18-year-old man is in police custody in connection with Brown's death, and investigators recovered a firearm during the investigation. The names of the two people arrested have not been released, as they were awaiting their first court appearances, expected in the coming days, according to the station's report.
A Complex With a History of Gunfire
Thursday's shooting adds to a string of gun violence at Fox Ridge Apartments stretching back years. A teenage boy, 16, was hospitalized after being shot near the complex and was expected to survive, according to ARC West Michigan, which reported the circumstances of that shooting remained under investigation.
Gunfire at the complex is not a new phenomenon. In December 2020, bullets struck a vehicle carrying a 4-month-old child in the 1300 block of Fox Ridge Drive, though WWMT reported no injuries were documented in that incident. A separate shooting near Alamo Avenue left a 24-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds in what KDPS officials described as critical but stable condition, with two 19-year-old men and a 25-year-old woman later arrested and two guns recovered, per the outlet's report.
Housing Conditions Draw Scrutiny
Beyond the violence, Fox Ridge has faced scrutiny over its living conditions. The 216-unit complex of eight buildings has drawn tenant and advocate complaints of rodents, roaches, sewage backups, damaged flooring and brown water, according to a report from Now Kalamazoo. Some of those complaints were documented in a March 2024 federal housing report, the outlet noted.
Independent Management Services, which manages Fox Ridge along with more than 100 other low-income housing properties across a dozen states, told Now Kalamazoo that the issues raising concerns were isolated rather than complex-wide, and that the company meets or exceeds regulatory requirements. Police have not said whether housing conditions bear any relation to the recent shootings at the property.
