A 4-year-old boy has died after drowning at a Phoenix home near Baseline Road and 67th Avenue, authorities said. Police officers and fire department personnel responded to the residence shortly before 10 p.m. Saturday after a report of a child drowning, and the boy was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he died after arrival.
According to ABC15 Arizona, which first reported the child's age as 4, authorities have released no other details about what led up to the drowning. The outlet said the incident remains under police investigation, and no further information — including how the child came to be in the water — has been made public.
A separate report from KTAR News described the victim as a 2-year-old boy who was pulled from a backyard pool at a Phoenix home Saturday night, with firefighters finding him unconscious and not breathing. That report also cited family members who said the boy's time underwater was unknown, and cited early information indicating there was no pool fence at the home. It is not clear whether the two reports describe the same incident, and officials have not publicly reconciled the differing ages.
Conflicting Details on Timing and Age
A Phoenix police media advisory obtained by local outlets placed the initial call to officers at around 10:20 p.m. in the area of 67th Avenue and Baseline Road, a later time than the shortly-before-10-p.m. response window reported by ABC15. The discrepancy, like the age difference between the two drowning reports, has not been explained by any official, primary-source statement, and the underlying facts of the case — including the child's identity, the exact address, and what caused the drowning — remain unconfirmed.
Arizona's Broader Drowning Numbers
The Phoenix case comes as Arizona has seen a sharp swing in child drowning statistics. Fatal drownings among children under age 5 in Arizona fell from 19 in 2024 to eight in 2025, according to figures reported by KTAR News. That same report noted 2024 had been one of the worst years for child drowning deaths in the state in the previous two decades, and that all but two of those 2024 deaths occurred when there were no planned swimming activities underway.
Water-related deaths across Maricopa and Pinal counties also dropped, falling from 79 in 2024 to 57 in 2025, per FOX 10 Phoenix. Phoenix Fire has since launched its 2026 water-safety campaign aimed at pushing those numbers down further, the station reported.
Another Recent Arizona Drowning Case
The Phoenix incident follows other recent child drownings in the region. Last year, a 4-year-old boy was pulled from the water at Chandler's Hamilton Aquatic Center during a private event hosted by First Baptist Church of Chandler that drew more than 100 people, according to azfamily.com. Body camera footage released by Chandler police showed a lifeguard giving the boy six rescue breaths while other lifeguards checked his vital signs, the station reported, and the case prompted a police investigation and review of the body-camera video months later.
No arrests or charges have been reported in connection with the Phoenix drowning, and investigators have not said whether they believe foul play was involved. Authorities have asked for no public assistance so far, and it remains unclear when additional details about the child or the circumstances of the drowning might be released.
