A sprawling new game hub is landing on Middlesex Turnpike this fall, promising 12 themed arenas and more than 55 game variations just across the street from the Burlington Mall. Activate Games will open its second Greater Boston location at 90 Middlesex Turnpike in Burlington on November 7, giving the Massachusetts suburb its own version of the tech-driven physical gaming concept that has already built a following in Dorchester.

The 10,923-square-foot Burlington venue will pack 12 arenas and more than 55 game variations into the space, according to MassLive, which first reported the opening date and layout details for the site. The location sits in a 37,000-square-foot retail plaza that The Davis Companies purchased for $14.1 million in May 2024, directly across from the more than 1.2-million-square-foot Burlington Mall, according to Traded. That stretch of Middlesex Turnpike sees more than 31,000 vehicles pass daily and draws a daytime worker population topping 113,000 within a three-mile radius, per Brixmor Property Group, numbers that help explain why a suburban commercial corridor landed a concept built around foot traffic and repeat visits.

What Players Will Actually Do Inside

Activate's game rooms are built around short, high-intensity challenges, with individual games running one to three minutes across ten difficulty levels and electronic RFID wristbands tracking each player's score. Burlington's lineup will include experiences called Hoops, Laser, Mega Grid, Hide, and Press, all designed for a range of skill levels from casual walk-ins to competitive repeat players. Players earn stars, log achievement rankings, and can return to try to beat their own best scores, per the same account from MassLive.

Activate executive Jason Thompson said the company is excited to bring a second location to the Greater Boston area, adding that the Burlington site will give families, friends, and competitors access to physical and mental challenges, according to the station's report. The games are pitched as tests of speed, agility, and communication rather than pure reflexes, which is part of what has made the format stick with both families and adult groups.

Grand Opening Perks and Early-Bird Deals

Activate will host a grand opening event in Burlington on November 7, and the first 50 guests in line when doors open will get half-priced priority gameplay with no reservation required, per the same MassLive report. Those early arrivals will also receive a limited-edition Activate wristband offering complimentary weekly gameplay for 30 days.

From a Winnipeg Escape Room to a Global Chain

Activate Games was founded in 2019 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, by Adam and Megan Schmidt, who had previously run a successful escape room business before pivoting to the active, tech-driven format, according to Canadian Geographic. The company has grown fast since then, expanding to more than 75 locations worldwide as of May 2026, up from 50 locations just the prior August, with long-term plans to scale past 200 locations over the next decade, per Activate's own announcement of its milestone expansion.

That growth has come with industry recognition. Activate ranked #1 in entertainment on The Globe and Mail's 2025 Canada's Top Growing Companies list and #1 in leisure and entertainment on the Financial Times' 2025 Americas' Fastest Growing Companies list, following a 209% compound annual growth rate between 2020 and 2023. The company also launched the Activate Global League in late 2025, an active gaming league that lets players at different venues worldwide compete against one another in real-time, score-tracked physical matchups.

Burlington's location is run by Sounds Fun Entertainment, a Kentucky-based hospitality operator managing the site as part of a 50-venue U.S. development agreement it signed with Activate in October 2024. The franchise structure mirrors how Activate has scaled quickly across North America without building out every location itself.

Boston's Second Stop After a Packed Dorchester Debut

Burlington will be Activate's second Greater Boston venue after the company opened its first New England location at South Bay Center in Dorchester in November 2025. That site has regularly drawn crowds of more than 70 people at a time across its 11 active micro-arenas, according to the Dorchester Reporter. Hoodline previously covered Activate's suburban-mall playbook when the company leveled up Wauwatosa's Mayfair Mall in July, and its urban flagship launch in Manhattan's Union Square the following month.

The Burlington opening also lands amid a broader boom in what the industry calls competitive socializing. The global family entertainment center market is projected to reach $37.55 billion in 2026 and surpass $70 billion by 2034, driven by rising demand for multi-attraction formats that blend physical activity with game mechanics, according to the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions. Whether Burlington can match Dorchester's packed-house energy remains to be seen, but the site's mall-adjacent location and heavy daily traffic give it a built-in audience from day one.
