An arborist fell to their death while working in a tree in North Plains on Tuesday evening, leaving a rural stretch of Washington County with more questions than answers. The incident happened around 5 p.m. near Northwest Dixie Mountain Road and Northwest Northrup Road. Authorities say an investigation is underway.
According to KPTV, the Washington County Sheriff's Office confirmed that the person who died was an arborist. The station's report attributes the 5 p.m. timing to Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue.
What Authorities Haven't Said Yet
Officials have not released the victim's identity. Details about how the fall happened also have not been made public, per the same report.
That leaves several basic questions open. Nothing released so far explains the circumstances of the fall, and no cause has been announced.
A Dangerous Line of Work
Tree work has long carried serious risk, and the research on it is stark. A study of federal and state fatality-investigation reports from 1987 to 2023 found that falls from trees accounted for 16.1% of the landscaping and tree-care worker deaths examined. The same research found that grounds-maintenance workers had an average annual fatality rate of 19.1 per 100,000 full-time workers in 2021, compared with 3.8 across all private industries.
The study also found that more than 66% of the fatal incidents it reviewed involved tree-care workers who had been on the job for a year or less. Among employers in those reports, 60.2% lacked a written safety plan and 34.4% did not provide job training. Nothing in the available evidence shows that any of those patterns applied to Tuesday's North Plains death.
Oregon regulates the industry through a dedicated rule set. Oregon OSHA says its requirements for the tree and shrub service industry are found in Division 2/R, 437-002-0301. It is not yet known whether that agency or any other workplace-safety regulator has opened its own inquiry into the North Plains death.
Another Arborist Death Earlier This Year
The North Plains death follows another fatal arborist incident in the Portland area. OregonLive reported that an arborist felling trees in Forest Park was hit and killed by a falling tree on a Tuesday morning. Portland Fire & Rescue said a tree unrelated to the crew's work toppled and crushed the man, who was working with a private team near a recent landslide.
The circumstances in that case were different from what is known about North Plains, where authorities have not said what led to the fall. For now, the investigators' findings are the missing piece, along with the name of the person who died.
