A man's jaw was slashed open during a confrontation that erupted while he waited for a boot to be removed from his car on the 900 block of Marietta Street NW, and Atlanta police are now searching for the person responsible. The attack happened on May 27, 2026, and left the victim needing treatment at a hospital across town. Investigators say they still do not know the identity of the man they are looking for, only a description of what he was wearing and how he looked that day.
According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the victim and a witness were waiting for a vehicle boot to be removed when four men approached them on the street. One of the men, described as wearing a gray sweater and sporting an afro, engaged with the witness before turning his attention to the victim. A physical altercation followed, and police say that man used a knife-like weapon to slash the victim across the right jaw.
Police say the attacker then searched through the victim's pockets before the group of four men fled the scene in a gray sedan, driving eastbound on Marietta Street NW. Authorities have not disclosed whether any items were actually taken from the victim during that search, leaving open the question of whether the case could eventually be elevated from aggravated assault to armed robbery. The victim sought treatment at Emory University Hospital Midtown, located roughly 1.5 miles east of the crime scene, after suffering what police describe as a severe cut to his jaw.
Victim's Identity and Condition Remain Undisclosed
Atlanta police have not released the victim's identity or provided any update on his condition since the assault. The relationship between the four men in the gray sedan and the victim or the booting company involved also remains unclear — it is not known whether the group was affiliated with the parking enforcement operation or whether they were bystanders who became involved during the wait for the boot's removal.
If caught, the person of interest could face serious legal exposure. Under Georgia law, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon or an instrument likely to cause serious injury is a felony punishable by one to 20 years in prison, according to FindLaw.
A Block With a Violent History
The 900 block of Marietta Street NW has seen violence before. In May 2024, the same block was the scene of a fatal double shooting that left one man dead and another critically injured, as reported by WSB-TV. Years earlier, in January 2020, an 18-year-old suspect was arrested for stabbing an employee multiple times at a business on the same block, a case that led to charges of attempted murder and aggravated assault, per the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Booting Disputes Have Turned Deadly Before in Metro Atlanta
This is not the first time a parking boot encounter has turned violent in the region. In DeKalb parking boot killing, a parking worker removing a vehicle boot was shot and killed during an argument in July 2025, a case that resulted in a life sentence for the shooter this past September. Georgia lawmakers have tried to rein in the friction surrounding private booting: House Bill 551 capped removal fees at $75 per day, mandated a one-hour response time, and barred cash-only transactions, according to the statutory rules outlined by Secret Atlanta. The same regulations require booting technicians to release a vehicle without charge if a driver returns before installation of the boot is complete.
Private booting itself is only legal in Georgia cities that have passed local ordinances authorizing the practice, following a 2021 Georgia Supreme Court decision finding that property owners have no common-law right to boot unauthorized vehicles, as reported by WABE. Atlanta is among the Georgia cities with such an ordinance in place.
The slashing also arrives amid a broader rise in non-fatal violence across the city. Atlanta Police Department figures show homicides fell to 94 in 2025, even as reported aggravated assault cases climbed from roughly 2,400 in 2024 to more than 3,000 in 2025, according to 11Alive.
