Atlanta police were involved in a shooting with a suspect Wednesday in northwest Atlanta, but key details remain unknown, including what led to the confrontation and the condition of the person who was shot.
What We Know So Far
Sources told 11Alive that a suspect was shot during the incident, which took place in the Joseph E. Boone Boulevard area of northwest Atlanta. Preliminary information indicated that police officers were not seriously injured, though that detail has not been confirmed beyond the initial reporting. Police have not released any additional details about what led to the shooting, the suspect's condition, or whether anyone else was hurt.
11Alive said it had contacted the police department for more information and that reporter Noelle Williams was en route to the scene.
A Corridor With a Recent History of Violence
The Joseph E. Boone Boulevard corridor has seen other violent incidents in recent memory, though it is not established whether any of them are connected to Wednesday's shooting. In one earlier case, the Atlanta Police Department said it was investigating after a shooting left two teen boys hurt in the area near Kipp Ways Academy Charter School, with both boys shot in the ankle, the outlet reported. Police said in that case they had identified a vehicle involved in the shooting and that one person was taken into custody, with a preliminary investigation finding the teens were shot during a shootout with unknown individuals amid a dispute.
In a separate incident on the same boulevard, Atlanta Police investigated after two men were shot in a parking lot at 775 Joseph E. Boone Boulevard NW. Police said they found both men with gunshot wounds, and both were reported alert, conscious and breathing before being taken to a hospital for treatment. Investigators believed the two men had been in an argument when one pulled out a gun, and detectives with APD's aggravated assault unit were working to determine the full circumstances. Police said that investigation remained ongoing.
It has not been established whether either of those earlier shootings is the same incident as Wednesday's officer-involved shooting, and the available information does not connect them.
Outside Review in Other Atlanta Cases
A separate officer-involved shooting at an apartment complex on Cheshire Bridge Road in northeast Atlanta earlier this year provides another example of an outside investigation. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation investigated the shooting at the Atlanta Police Department’s request. Atlanta News First reported that police were called to the complex at around 7:30 a.m. and identified the suspect as 23-year-old Alonte Ray. Officials said one officer was grazed in the head by a bullet and another suffered shrapnel lacerations; five officers fired their weapons, but the suspect was not hit. Both injured officers were hospitalized and later released, and Ray was taken into custody after being barricaded inside the apartment for hours. That case does not establish how Wednesday’s shooting is being investigated.
What Prior Records Show About GBI Reviews
In a separate incident on October 11, 2025, at 41 Irby Avenue NE, the Atlanta Police Department said GBI investigators were notified and would lead the investigation. That record does not establish who is investigating Wednesday’s shooting. The GBI’s account of a separate July 27, 2024, officer-involved shooting in the 700 block of Peachtree Street says the suspect shot at an officer, who returned fire and hit him in the arm. These individual records illustrate past cases, but do not provide a count or establish a broader trend in outcomes.
For now, the shooting in northwest Atlanta remains under investigation, and officials have not released the suspect's condition or clarified what led up to the confrontation. 11Alive said it would continue updating its reporting as police release more information.
