Travis Isaac was 14 years old on January 8, 2024, riding in a car driven by his older brother Cameron, with his younger brother Gabriel also inside, when heavy rain sent the vehicle hydroplaning into multiple trees. The crash split the car in half and threw Travis from the vehicle. Cameron and Gabriel were pronounced dead the next day. Travis spent a week in a coma, and nearly three years later he is a team captain and star student at his Atlanta high school.
The three brothers were traveling to their father's home to meet their new baby sister when the crash happened, according to FOX 5 Atlanta, which later profiled Travis's story; WSB-TV had reported on Travis and the crash on January 22, 2024. Travis suffered three skull fractures, two facial fractures and a fracture to his T2 vertebra. Doctors performed brain surgery, removing part of his skull to relieve pressure, according to a separate account from WSB-TV. Doctors warned Travis that he might never play football again, a sport that had served as a bond between him and his brothers, per the same FOX 5 report.
A Full Recovery and a New School
Travis made a full recovery from the extensive head and spinal injuries, the station's report states. Following months of rehabilitation, he transferred to Frederick Douglass High School in Atlanta, where he now attends and leads the football team as its captain. Teammates have come to lean on his resilience as a rallying point during games, according to the same account.
He returned to the field in fall 2025 wearing a Guardian Cap, the padded shell some programs use over helmets. A 2023 study of 2,610 high school football players across 41 Wisconsin schools, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, found that Guardian Cap use during practice was not associated with a lower risk of sport-related concussion in either practices or games; 180 athletes in that study, or 6.9%, sustained a concussion, and no players in either cohort wore the caps during games. The research does not speak to Travis's individual case, but Guardian Caps are used in football practices across leagues.
Jersey No. 9 and a Shot at College Ball
Travis now wears jersey number nine to honor his brothers, FOX 5 Atlanta reported. Atlanta News First, which also profiled Travis ahead of a senior night matchup against Pace Academy, reported that he wears the number in honor of the brothers who died on January 9 and that he carries a 3.67 GPA; FOX 5 Atlanta separately reported a 3.6 GPA and said he plans to graduate in December. Both figures point to the same picture: a student maintaining strong academics while captaining a varsity program.
Colleges have been talking with Isaac about the possibility of playing football at the next level, according to Atlanta News First. He hopes to play college football, after doctors were unsure whether he would be able to walk and told him he likely would never play football again. For now, Travis is described by FOX 5 Atlanta as both a high school football captain and a star student, carrying his brothers' memory onto the field with every snap.
