The Avondale Branch Library at 3566 Reading Road is set to reopen Nov. 7 after a $7.5 million renovation that reshaped the Cincinnati neighborhood hub with new patron spaces, upgraded building systems and fresh equipment. The overhaul closes out months of construction that forced the branch into a temporary home while crews rebuilt the interior from the foundation up.
The Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library is reopening the Avondale Branch following what Local 12 describes as a $7.5 million overhaul that added new spaces and equipment accessible to patrons. The station reports the renovation is the latest piece of a sweeping, system-wide reinvestment that has touched branches across the county.
What Changed Inside the Branch
The renovated building includes an updated children's area, a renovated meeting room equipped with maker tools, a quiet group study area and a new service point, according to the same Local 12 report. Interiors throughout the branch were also refreshed as part of the project.
Behind the scenes, the work went well beyond cosmetics. The building received foundation waterproofing, upgraded electrical and mechanical systems, LED lighting, new basement windows and new furnishings, the station's report notes, pointing to a rebuild that addressed the branch's infrastructure along with its public-facing spaces.
A Temporary Home While Construction Took Over
While the Reading Road building was under construction, the branch operated out of a temporary site inside Living God Church at 434 Forest Ave. That stand-in location ended service at the close of business on Sept. 15, per the same account, clearing the way for staff to prepare the renovated building for its return.
Part of a $190 Million, System-Wide Push
The Avondale project is one piece of a much larger undertaking known as Building the Next Generation Library, a multiyear facilities master plan funded through a 2018 levy, Local 12 reports. Under that plan, the library system is investing $190 million over 10 years to upgrade all 41 branches, including its main downtown library.
That main library renovation, completed in July 2024, carried a $43 million price tag, according to Local 12. As the Cincinnati Business Courier notes, the broader facilities plan has already produced overhauls of several locations and the construction of entirely new branches across the county.
Eva Jane Romaine Coombe Library Director Paula Brehm-Heeger framed the branch-by-branch investment as a way of keeping neighborhood libraries responsive to the people who use them. “Projects like this ensure our neighborhood libraries continue to meet the needs of the communities they serve,” she said, according to Spectrum News 1.
How Avondale Compares to Other Branch Projects
The Avondale renovation dwarfs some of the library system's other recent branch work. The Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library reopened its Oakley branch after completing more than $1 million in renovations, according to the Business Courier, though a separate search-result snippet from the same outlet described that project's cost as $1.5 million — a discrepancy that remains unresolved in the available reporting. Either figure is a fraction of what went into bringing the Avondale building back to life.
