A 26-year-old woman is facing an attempted second-degree murder charge after East Baton Rouge Parish deputies say she shot a man multiple times along Sharon Hills Boulevard, then returned to the scene in his car while investigators were still working the case. Jalaycia Barnes was booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison following the Saturday morning shooting, which left a 33-year-old man wounded and driving himself to the hospital.
Deputies responded to reports of a shooting along Sharon Hills Boulevard on Saturday morning, according to arrest documents cited by WBRZ. The victim had already called 911 after being shot and then drove himself to a nearby hospital, where he was treated for multiple gunshot wounds. Deputies said the man was uncooperative with detectives and gave various accounts of how he was shot.
Surveillance Video Captures Altercation Before Shooting
Investigators reviewing surveillance footage say it showed Barnes punching the man in the side before he walked away from her. According to arrest documents, the video then showed him being shot as he headed toward his vehicle. At the scene, deputies said they found blood spatter, broken jewelry and a single cartridge case.
While deputies were still searching the home where the shooting happened, Barnes arrived driving the victim's car, according to the report. Deputies noted what appeared to be blood on the car's door. A search of the home turned up a pistol in the entryway, per the arrest documents.
Suspect Allegedly Admitted to the Shooting
According to the arrest documents, Barnes admitted to shooting the man as he walked away from her and got into his car. She was booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on charges of attempted second-degree murder and illegal use of weapons.
The charge carries a specific legal meaning: Louisiana defines an attempt as acting with specific intent to commit a crime and taking a step that directly tends toward it. Because second-degree murder carries a life sentence, the state’s attempt statute sets a penalty of 10 to 50 years at hard labor, without parole, probation or suspension of sentence, if a defendant is convicted. The charge is an allegation, not a finding of guilt. Louisiana’s attempt statute and second-degree murder law set out those provisions.
The case remains under investigation, and additional details about a possible relationship between Barnes and the victim, a motive, or where exactly the shooting took place have not been released.
The East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner’s Office recorded 86 homicide deaths through Oct. 26, 2026, and listed 106 for 2025, with others pending. The office defines homicide as a death caused by another person, while noting that not every such death is necessarily a crime. Those figures track fatal cases, not shootings overall; the man in this case drove himself to a hospital, and the reported shooting occurred before the coroner’s Oct. 26 cutoff. The coroner’s homicide tally provides that local fatal-violence context.
