A man tried to abduct a 13-year-old girl as she walked home after getting off her school bus in Beaverton, grabbing her from behind and attempting to drag her away before she screamed and broke free. The girl then ran to a nearby apartment complex, where she told the property manager what had just happened.
According to KATU, Beaverton police said the girl was the last student to get off her bus near Southwest 6th Street and Redbud Way when a man she did not know attacked her shortly after 4:30 p.m. The station reports the man grabbed her from behind and tried to drag her away, but she screamed and managed to escape his grip before he could pull her further.
Girl Sought Help at Nearby Apartments
After escaping, the girl ran to the Stone Creek Apartments and told the apartment manager there what had occurred, per the same account. Officers responded and searched the surrounding area, including a vacant home, but did not locate the man, the station reports.
Police described the suspect as a Black man standing about 6 feet tall with a medium-length beard, wearing a cream-colored T-shirt, per the report. No arrest has been announced in connection with the Beaverton case. Anyone with information or who witnessed the incident is asked to call police at 503-526-2280.
A Separate Canby Case
The Beaverton incident occurred on the same day as a different and unrelated child abduction case in Canby, where police working with federal law enforcement said a man allegedly entered an apartment, attacked a 12-year-old girl and abducted her 10-year-old sister just before 2 a.m. on Wednesday, according to oregonlive.com. That investigation drew in the FBI, the Clackamas County Major Crimes Team, the Oregon State Police and the U.S. Marshals Service, the outlet reports.
The 10-year-old girl in that case was found alive in an Oregon City home about 12 hours after she was reported abducted, after a SWAT tactical team surrounded the residence, oregonlive.com reports. The U.S. Marshals Service arrested 35-year-old Vince Edgar Chavez in the home after he allegedly tried to flee, according to the outlet.
The Beaverton case remains under investigation, with police continuing to search for the man seen near the vacant home and asking the community to come forward with any information that could help identify him.
