Riders waiting for the bus outside Memorial Hospital in Belleville will soon have more than a curb to stand on. Partner organizations have released an initial design for a transformed MetroBus stop at 4500 Memorial Drive, across from the hospital's main entrance, featuring an enhanced shelter, new seating, lighting, wayfinding and green space built around a decades-old tree that will provide natural shade.
The project comes from a partnership between the St. Clair County Transit District, Memorial Foundation, Inc. and AARP in St. Louis, working alongside Citizens for Modern Transit, according to RiverBender.com. The stop sits on the BJC Memorial Hospital campus and is served by the Route 14 Memorial Hospital-Westview Plaza bus line, which connects to MetroLink. The Lochmueller Group has been selected as the project's design firm, and Memorial Hospital will maintain the finished site once it's complete, per the same report.
Construction is expected to begin in early 2027 and wrap up by spring of that year, RiverBender.com reports. That timeline comes after St. Clair County Transit District sought qualifications from designers, architects, artists and interdisciplinary teams for the stop, according to St. Clair County Transit District, which had hoped to initiate the project by July 1, 2026. The transit district describes the goal as transforming the area into a space that encourages health and wellness, cultivates community and increases transit use.
A Sixth Transformation for St. Clair County
Once finished, the Memorial Hospital stop will become the sixth Transit Stop Transformation project in St. Clair County, the article notes. Earlier work includes completed transformations at the Emerson Park and Belleville transit centers and a Maplewood MetroBus stop, while a project moved forward at North Hanley. For the Memorial Hospital project, the transit district describes goals of encouraging health and wellness, cultivating community and increasing transit use.
The Belleville Transit Center's own transformation, completed as the third such project in the region, converted the concrete area between the bus bays and the MetroLink entrance into an interactive space with bike racks, shade structures, benches, planters and artwork, according to St. Clair County Transit District. Transformations before that were completed at the Emerson Park Transit Center in August 2021 and at a Maplewood MetroBus stop back in June 2020, while a fourth project moved forward at North Hanley in St. Louis County.
Officials Frame the Project as a First Impression
Kimberly Cella, CEO of Citizens for Modern Transit, said the collaboration will deliver transit amenities for hospital riders, employees and visitors, per RiverBender.com's reporting. Ken Sharkey, managing director of the St. Clair County Transit District, said transit stops are often riders' first and last contact with the transit system. Liz Jennings, Memorial Foundation manager, said the shelter provides a comfortable amenity for transit riders and supports access to the hospital campus, according to the same account.
Program partners work with stakeholders to establish improvements meant to enhance safety, encourage ridership and increase activity around transit areas.
Why a Bench Matters More Than It Sounds
The hospital stop's design echoes a broader regional push for basic transit amenities. Citizens for Modern Transit created its Story of a Bench initiative with AARP in St. Louis to document the impact of bench installations at three to five transit stops per year, according to Citizens for Modern Transit. The group says even a basic amenity like a bench can build support for transit, increase ridership and improve the rider experience, and partner organizations report that riders say benches ease physical and mental stress after work or school, while carrying groceries, or while managing mobility challenges or health conditions.
Citizens for Modern Transit requires partner organizations seeking bench installations to have funding, property ownership or a permit, a maintenance commitment, and a willingness to participate in media releases and case studies.
The Hospital Stop's Transit Connections
The Memorial Hospital project is part of St. Clair County's transit network. The hospital stop is served by the Route 14 Memorial Hospital-Westview Plaza bus line, which connects to MetroLink.
