The Häagen-Dazs shop at Westfield Montgomery Mall in Bethesda is back open for business, serving up cones and sundaes again after a stretch this year when it looked like the ice cream counter might be gone for good.
According to MoCo Show, the shop reopened at Westfield Montgomery Mall following its temporary closure for renovations. The closure began back in July, when the location shut its doors for renovation work that, per mocoshow.com, was described at the time as temporary with reopening expected once the work wrapped up.
Still, the closure initially had the look of a permanent shutdown, and some shoppers feared the Bethesda scoop shop had served its last cone. That turned out not to be the case, as the shop has now reopened following the completed renovation, per the Robert Dyer report cited by MoCo Show.
Not the First Time This Shop Has Gone Dark
This isn't the first time the Bethesda Häagen-Dazs has pulled this vanishing act. The shop's closure for renovations marked the second time in a decade that it temporarily shut down for similar work, according to robertdyer.blogspot.com. The pattern has made for a confusing few months for mall regulars who've had to guess whether their favorite scoop shop was closing for a facelift or for good.
Häagen-Dazs wasn't the only familiar name to go dark and come back at Westfield Montgomery Mall this year. T-Mobile and Lilly Pulitzer also completed major renovation projects and reopened alongside the ice cream shop, as reported by Rockville Nights. All three reopenings landed just ahead of Black Friday and the start of the holiday shopping season.
What's on the Menu
For anyone who's forgotten what they've been missing, Häagen-Dazs shops serve hand-packed pints, milkshakes, sundaes, and ice cream cones, per mocoshow.com. Popular flavors offered by the brand have included Midnight Cookies & Cream, Dulce de Leche, Rum Raisin, Belgian Chocolate, and White Chocolate Raspberry Truffle.
Montgomery County ice cream fans aren't limited to the mall location. Häagen-Dazs also operates shops at 211 Market Street West in Gaithersburg and 1516 Rockville Pike in Rockville, the latter of which opened in the former home of Mr. Wish, according to mocoshow.com's earlier coverage. The brand has a longer history in the area too: it closed its Bethesda Row store in the summer of 2021 after about a decade of business at that location, per the same mocoshow.com report.
