Tip Line Open As Search For Driver Continues
Kansas City, Kansas police are asking anyone with information about the crash to come forward. Those with details can call the Crime Stoppers TIPS hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477), the station's report notes.
The case echoes a fatal hit-and-run just across the state line in January 2024, when a driver struck and killed a bicyclist near 81st Terrace and North Oak Trafficway in Kansas City, Missouri. That driver, Brian Zug, was eventually sentenced to 10 years in prison after investigators said they detected the odor of alcohol on his breath and noted his speech was slurred during a traffic stop, according to Fox4KC. Zug pleaded guilty in June to DWI causing death, while a separate charge of leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death was dismissed, and he is serving his sentence in the Missouri Department of Corrections, Fox4KC reported.
No charges have been announced in the Kansas City, Kansas case, and the driver remains unidentified as police continue working to piece together what happened on Metropolitan Avenue.
Bicyclist Deaths Remain A Regional Concern
Crashes involving bicyclists and pedestrians continue to draw scrutiny from traffic-safety officials across the region. In nearby Lawrence, 15% of injury or fatality crashes in 2025 involved a collision with a bicyclist or pedestrian, according to a report cited by the Lawrence Journal-World. That city recorded four fatality crashes and 317 injury crashes within its limits in 2025, compared with 322 injury crashes the year before, and three of those four fatal crashes involved motorcycles, with two happening at the same roundabout on Clinton Parkway, the paper reported. Lawrence has set a goal of zero transportation fatalities and serious injuries by 2050 under its Vision Zero plan.
For now, the identity of the man killed on Metropolitan Avenue has not been released, and Kansas City, Kansas police have not said when the driver might be identified. Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information about the vehicle involved is urged to contact investigators as the search continues.
