A man died and his passenger was seriously hurt after their car crashed near Park Avenue and School Street in Bloomfield in the predawn hours, leaving police still working to confirm the identities of both men. Officers on patrol came across the heavily damaged vehicle around 1:45 a.m. and found both occupants trapped inside.
According to WFSB, police were patrolling the area when they spotted the vehicle with significant damage, prompting an immediate request for the Bloomfield Volunteer Ambulance and the Bloomfield Center Fire Department to respond. Both occupants were found with significant, life-threatening injuries, and emergency crews worked to extricate them from the wreckage before transporting them to a hospital.
The rescue operations for the two men played out very differently, as reported by CT Insider. The passenger was conscious and alert when crews pulled him free and rushed him to St. Francis Hospital. The driver, by contrast, needed an extended extrication before he could be taken to Hartford Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Police Still Working to Identify Both Men
In a statement relayed by the same outlet, Bloomfield Deputy Chief Stephen Hajdasz said authorities are still working to positively identify the two men and asked anyone with information about the crash to come forward. Those with details are urged to call police at 860-242-5501.
The North Central Municipal Accident Reconstruction Team, known as NCMART, has taken over the crash investigation, per WFSB. The regional task force, which brings together multiple agencies to document and process severe and fatal crashes across north-central Connecticut, has been a familiar presence in Bloomfield this year.
A String of Fatal Crashes in Bloomfield
NCMART was also called in after a tow truck operator was struck and killed on Tunxis Avenue, according to a report from Patch published less than a month before this crash. The team previously reconstructed a fatal pedestrian crash involving a commercial dump truck on Woodland Avenue in November 2025, according to a press release from the Town of Bloomfield.
The stretch of School Street near Park Avenue where this crash occurred has drawn complaints before. Town meeting minutes from May show that residents had raised concerns with municipal officials about speeding, stop sign violations, and heavy traffic along School Street between West Eggleston Street and Park Avenue.
How This Fits Into Statewide Trends
Connecticut recorded 274 roadway deaths in 2025, a 12 percent drop from 312 fatalities the year before, according to figures released by the state. But that progress hasn't necessarily carried into this year: statewide monitoring from the UConn Connecticut Transportation Safety Research Center showed 140 traffic fatalities through mid-August, virtually unchanged from 139 deaths over the same stretch in 2025.
State lawmakers moved to address dangerous driving last fall, enacting stricter traffic safety laws that increased penalties for driving over 100 mph and required retraining courses for drivers with multiple moving violations, as reported by CT Mirror. The exact cause of this crash, including what led the vehicle to leave the road and whether speed or impairment played a role, remains unknown as NCMART's investigation continues.
This crash comes a week after Hoodline reported on a Bloomfield hit-and-run that injured a child, adding to a string of serious crashes that have drawn police and community attention to the town's roadways this year.
