A Brazilian university leader visiting Scottsdale was killed instantly Friday, October 16, 2026, when strong winds tore material loose from a roof and struck his head, according to police. Rogério Renato Mateucci, 55, was touring a residence near Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard and Cactus Road with a group of other people around 2 p.m. when the accident occurred, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Scottsdale Police Department said Mateucci was struck by a piece of material blown off a roof by powerful gusts while he was on the property, according to 12News. Police do not suspect foul play in what they are describing as a weather-related tragedy, the outlet reported. Mateucci was identified as the rector of the Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná, or PUCPR, one of Brazil's leading Pontifical Catholic universities, according to Ground News.
A Prominent Figure in Catholic Higher Education
Mateucci, a Marist Brother, had served as PUCPR's rector since 2022 and had just been reappointed to lead the institution through 2029, Ground News reported. He was visiting the United States on an official work trip when the accident occurred, the outlet noted. Before taking the top post, he worked in school administration and held a leadership role in PUCPR's Mission, Identity and Extension, according to Champagnat.org.
News of his death prompted an immediate response back home. PUCPR declared an official period of mourning and suspended academic activities across its Curitiba, Londrina, and Toledo campuses on October 17 and 19, 2026, Saturday and Monday; administrative activities were canceled on Monday, October 19, per Leaf Promotions. The university scheduled a memorial Mass at its Jesus Mestre University Chapel in Curitiba for Monday, October 19, at 5:30 p.m., the same outlet reported. Funeral arrangements were expected after his body returned to Brazil.
Windy Conditions Around the Incident
The fatal accident unfolded during a stretch of hazardous weather. Forecasts called for south winds and gusts up to 45 mph, and warned that unsecured objects could become airborne.
Forecasters also called for strong winds in parts of Arizona. Local station FOX 10 Phoenix reported that Valley-wide gusts up to 45 mph kicked up blowing dust and created difficult driving conditions ahead of a seasonal cold front, with the strong winds preceding a drop in temperatures statewide.
Open Questions About the Property and Any Repairs
The precise material that struck Mateucci and whether construction or repair work was underway at the property remain unclear.
