A 41-year-old man is dead and a 34-year-old woman is recovering after a drive-by shooting tore through the Fairfield Township section of Bridgeton last Friday evening. Shykeem Boyd suffered several gunshot wounds and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later died, while the woman was hospitalized and listed in stable condition.

According to NBC10 Philadelphia, New Jersey State Police troopers responded to the area of Sunset Avenue and Stewart Avenue around 4:53 p.m. on Oct. 9 after reports of gunfire. The Cumberland County Prosecutor's Office said the shooting killed one man and injured one woman, though the office did not release the identities beyond Boyd's name and the woman's age.

Investigation Remains Wide Open

No suspects, vehicle description, weapon details or motive have been released in connection with the shooting, and no charges have been announced. The case is being investigated jointly by the New Jersey State Police Major Crimes Unit and the Cumberland County Prosecutor's Office, per the same report.

Officials asked anyone with information to come forward. Tips can be directed to NJSP Detective II D. Quartuccio at 609-789-2892 or Cumberland County Prosecutor's Office Detective W. Parker at 856-525-7475.

Not the First Drive-By in Bridgeton

This isn't the first time Bridgeton has dealt with gunfire aimed at a moving target. Back in 2019, a 38-year-old man was shot in the face while riding as a passenger on North Laurel Street in the early hours of Nov. 1, according to nj.com. At least four shots were fired at that vehicle, and the victim was treated at Cooper University Hospital before being released. Investigators in that case eventually made arrests in Connecticut after piecing together extensive security-camera footage, nj.com reported.

Shootings Have Been Trending Down Statewide

The Bridgeton shooting comes even as New Jersey has seen gun violence fall to historic lows. The state recorded 559 shooting victims across 487 incidents in 2025, down from 778 victims in 2024 and 924 in 2023, according to New Jersey Monitor. That marked the third consecutive year shootings hit a record low statewide.

Gun-violence fatalities also dropped, with 107 deaths reported in 2025, a 31% decrease from 2024 and more than a 60% decrease from 2016, the outlet reported. The statewide trend offers little comfort to Bridgeton families still waiting for answers in Boyd's death, as the investigation into last Friday's shooting continues with no arrests announced.
