A 26-year-old white man is in custody in Buchanan County after what authorities describe as a lengthy and complex investigation into sexual misconduct with a child. The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office said deputies took him into custody around 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, following the execution of a search warrant that turned up electronic items and other evidence investigators are now reviewing.
According to KCTV5, the warrant was carried out in the 10000 block of Northeast State Route 6, where law enforcement seized the electronics and other evidence tied to the case. The sheriff’s office has not released the suspect’s name, and the station reports that officials declined to identify him publicly. The case has been turned over to the Buchanan County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, which will decide whether to file charges, though no charges had been confirmed as of the arrest.
Multiple Agencies Joined the Investigation
The arrest was not a solo effort. Per the same account, members of the Northwest Missouri Cybercrime Task Force, an officer from the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office, and investigators with Homeland Security Investigations all assisted the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office in making the arrest.
KMBC independently confirmed that a 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of sexual misconduct with a child near St. Joseph, and that the case has been submitted to the Buchanan County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for consideration of charges. KQ2 reported that the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division executed the warrant Tuesday evening at the Northeast Route 6 address, and that the suspect remains in custody while prosecutors weigh the case.
What Comes Next
Missouri law includes a statute specifically addressing sexual misconduct involving a child, codified under Section 566.083, according to the Missouri Revisor of Statutes. The publicly available text of the statute identifies the offense and its title, though it does not, in the material reviewed, spell out which subsection or penalty range might apply to this case.
No court date, bond amount, or formal charging document has been made public. The investigation remains active, and the prosecuting attorney’s office has not announced a timeline for deciding whether to move forward with charges against the man now in custody.
