City says alleged remarks do not represent its position
The City of Calera said the alleged comments were made by Mayor Kenny Dale Cost in a personal capacity and did not reflect the city’s position or policy, according to WBRC’s report. The city also affirmed its commitment to fair treatment without discrimination and said it had no further comment at that time.
Council members and residents sought accountability
WBRC reported differing responses from council members. Calvin Morgan condemned disrespect and hatred while saying the city would continue its work. Henry Davis urged an official to consider leaving office if their conduct damages public trust. Council President Drew Bradshaw acknowledged the anger and hurt in the community and said leaders’ conduct matters beyond their official duties.
Residents also expressed contrasting views, WBRC reported. Some wanted a clear account of what had been said and further action; others were prepared to accept Cost’s apology. The meeting ended without resolving those questions, according to the station.
Cost apologized but did not address the slur allegation
At the meeting, Cost apologized for a problem stemming from an incident at his home and said it would not happen again, WBRC reported. The station also reported accusations that he had used a racial slur and said he did not directly address that allegation during the public meeting.
Connection to an earlier complaint is unclear
The council had called a special meeting for Oct. 14 to discuss matters related to an individual’s character after a city spokesperson said the council had received a complaint involving an individual, according to AL.com. Whether that complaint was connected to the allegations against Cost remains unclear.
