A woman was pulled from a smoke-filled basement early Monday after Council Bluffs firefighters were dispatched to a residential house fire at 4:24 a.m. Crews arrived to find heavy smoke and flames pouring from the back of the home, with a report already in hand that an adult female was trapped below.
According to Western Iowa Today, firefighters pushed into the structure, worked to extinguish the flames, and searched the basement for the trapped woman. They located her there, removed her from the home, and transported her to a local hospital.
In the same room where the woman was found, firefighters discovered a deceased dog, the outlet reports. No further details on the woman's condition or the pet's ownership have been released.
Cause Still Under Investigation
The Council Bluffs Fire Marshal Division is now investigating what sparked the blaze, per the same account. No information on the home's address or the extent of structural damage has been made public.
This is not the first serious house fire to hit Council Bluffs in recent memory. A December 2024 fire at 2007 7th Avenue involved four occupants; Radio Iowa reported that firefighters found Peggy Rayner in a basement bedroom, and she was later pronounced dead at a hospital, while another occupant, Fayth Rayner, was treated for smoke inhalation and listed in stable condition. Two other people in that home were not injured.
A separate Council Bluffs house fire detailed by Daily Dispatch involved 911 callers reporting explosions; firefighters later described that home as a total loss after part of the roof collapsed, and crews stayed on scene to monitor for hot spots. That incident is unrelated to Monday's fire.
What Remains Unknown
Officials have not disclosed the woman's name, age, or the nature of her injuries beyond confirming she was taken to a hospital. The exact location of Monday's fire has also not been released, and investigators have not yet determined a cause.
