Six Pennsylvania teenagers were riding in a single vehicle on the New Jersey Turnpike before dawn Sunday when the car overturned and ejected two of them, both of whom were pronounced dead at the scene. The crash happened in the southbound outer lanes near mile marker 69.9 in Cranbury at 5:06 a.m., just south of the Molly Pitcher Service Area, leaving four other teens hospitalized with injuries that have not been publicly detailed.
Emergency responders found the overturned vehicle after a 911 call alerted them to the wreck, according to Daily Voice, which reported the crash site sits in Cranbury Township's southbound lanes near the well-known rest stop. Officials said the two who were ejected during the impact, a 19-year-old from Warminster and a 16-year-old from Hatboro, were pronounced dead at the scene, as reported by Patch.
Loved ones have since identified one of the victims as Dominic Fenton. His father, Joey Fenton Jr., wrote a public Facebook tribute describing a teenager who loved playing basketball at the park, spending hours on intense Xbox gaming sessions, watching history documentaries, and rooting for Philadelphia's sports teams. Authorities have not publicly identified either teenager killed in the crash, and it remains unconfirmed whether Fenton was the 16-year-old or the 19-year-old among the victims.
Community Rallies Around Fenton's Family
A GoFundMe campaign titled “In Loving Memory of Dominic” was organized by Stefanie Keenan to help the Fenton family of Hatboro cover funeral and memorial expenses. Keenan wrote that six boys were involved in what she called a devastating car accident, and that two of them lost their lives. As of Monday, October 12, 2026, the fundraiser had collected $16,201 toward its $22,000 goal from 210 donations.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and the station's report notes that neither who was driving nor what caused the vehicle to overturn has been disclosed. Middlesex County Prosecutor Linda Estremera and New Jersey State Police Acting Superintendent Jeanne Hengemuhle confirmed that detective bureaus from both agencies are jointly investigating the collision, according to RLS Media. Anyone with information has been directed to contact Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office Detective Shadi Zaiton at 732-745-4263 or the New Jersey State Police Cranbury Station Detective Bureau at 609-860-9000 ext. 4424.
Neighboring Hometowns, Shared Tragedy
Hatboro, in Montgomery County, directly borders Warminster Township in Bucks County along County Line Road, meaning both victims came from adjoining suburban communities roughly 15 miles north of Philadelphia, according to background compiled on Wikipedia. The teens had traveled together across state lines onto the New Jersey Turnpike before sunrise, a detail that underscores how closely their communities are intertwined despite sitting in different counties.
Whether seat belts were worn by the ejected occupants has not been addressed by investigators. Federal data analyzed by the National Safety Council shows that unrestrained occupants accounted for 48.4% of all motor vehicle fatalities nationwide in 2024, and that lap and shoulder belts cut the risk of fatal injury for front-seat occupants by 45%.
A High-Fatality Corridor
Preliminary New Jersey State Police statistics compiled through October 4 recorded 384 fatal crashes and 399 deaths statewide so far in 2026, with Middlesex County alone accounting for 36 fatalities across 35 fatal crashes. In January 2025, Governor Phil Murphy signed Assembly Bill 1476 creating the Target Zero Commission, an interdepartmental body tasked with developing a plan to eliminate all traffic deaths and serious injuries on New Jersey roads by 2040, according to the NJ Bicycle and Pedestrian Resource Center.
It remains unknown whether driver age or licensing status played any role in Sunday's crash. The identities of the surviving four teens, along with the extent of their injuries, have not been released.
For now, the Fenton family and the broader Hatboro-Warminster community are left grieving while investigators work to determine what caused the Cranbury crash.
