A house fire on Conyers Road in Crockett County, Tennessee left one person dead Wednesday evening, and a firefighter was also injured battling the blaze. The victim's identity has not been released, and state investigators have now taken over the case.
Deputies responded to the fire on Conyers Road on Oct. 21, according to Action News 5. One person was killed in the fire, and the station reports that the victim's identity is being withheld at this time. A firefighter was also hurt in the blaze and was treated at the scene, though further details on that injury were not disclosed.
Crockett County deputies requested help from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation's Fire Investigation Division, which is now the lead investigative agency in the case, according to WREG. A Broader Pattern of Fire Deaths Statewide
The Crockett County fire adds to a grim statewide tally. Tennessee's annual number of deaths in home fires declined from 146 in 2003 to 108 in 2022, per an analysis from the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance. Nationally, residential structure fires in 2023 averaged 5.8 deaths and 19.7 injuries per 1,000 fires, according to federal fire statistics from the U.S. Fire Administration.
Crockett County is not the only part of the state where the TBI has been called in to investigate a deadly fire recently. In Wayne County, multiple people were killed in a house fire in Waynesboro, according to Sheriff Shane Fisher, as reported by NewsChannel 5. That fire happened in the 100 block of Vaughn Street. Sheriff Shane Fisher said the TBI was requested to investigate because of the multiple fatalities involved, and the TBI confirmed it was requested to investigate. State investigators said that case remains active and ongoing.
What Comes Next
For now, the Crockett County case remains in the hands of state fire investigators, with the autopsy in Memphis expected to shed light on how the victim died. No additional details about the cause of the fire or the extent of the damage have been made public.
